How do I get rid of popups that only show up when I use IE (without switching browsers)? If I switch sites, or move forward or backwards, random poker or ad sites come up. I have swept (ad-aware/spybot), and I have a firewall. I have checked my processes...not sure what to remove. I'll take my chances of removing something critical...I have reformatted three times this year already graemlins/doh.gif Why do the nerds do this shit?

Edit: Don't say " Stop looking at porn!!" graemlins/slap.gif

Thanks for any help.

Scott

What does it do?

cthelper.exe - This is bundled with Creative software. It is designed to help third party developer build plugins and software to work alongside creatives software and hardware packages. If you have something like a Creative Labs soundcard in your system this file is OK. If you don't then you've got a problem

They may be scripted to just return again....

Have you tried spysweeper by webroot ?

It has been the best thus far for me, as it also runs full time in the background and tries to stop shit before it even gets there.

http://www.webroot.com/products/spysweeper/

CTHELPER = Is part of the creative labs driver if I recall.

Do you have a soundblaster live ect. card ?

A good place to find info on the stuff loading is actually google.

Go down each one, typing it into google and you'll generally find some useful info about it.

Start off downloading:

1) Ad-Aware

2) Spybot Seek & Destroy

You can find them both on www.download.com

Make sure after install, you need run the update option on both before scanning. Open Ad-Aware and do the following:

1) Click the link on the main page, lower-right, for "Check for updates now".

2) It'll pull the latest version info after you click the "connect" button, and if it's newer than yours, ask you to download and install it. Do this.

3) On the top of the window, find the icon that looks like a toothed gear, and highlights "settings" when the mouse arrow is hovered over it. Click this.

4) Click the "scanning" button on the left.

5) Under "Scan Settings", make sure you select the following (they will be selected once you click the circle and it comes up with a green checkmark);

-Scan within archives

-All options under the "Memory and Registry" section

6) Make sure "Skip files larger than ____" and "Skip non-executable" have a grey "x" for their circles.

7) Click the link for "Click here to select drives and folders", and select all of your local hard drives (Normally C:, and maybe a few others. Never CD-ROMs or floppy disk drives).

8) Click "Proceed" in this window, and you'll be returned to the main window. Click "Start" in the lower-right and run the scan.

9) Be sure to select all instances Ad-Aware finds, and delete them after the scan.

Open up Spybot: Search and Destroy, and make sure you do this in "Easy Mode".

1) On the left sidebar, click the "Online" button.

2) Along the top row, find the location button, and select a location in the US from the drop-down bar (arrow).

3) Click "Search for Updates".

4) If there are any available, click "Download Updates" and let them install.

5) Click on the "Spybot S&D" button on the left side to return to the main screen.

6) Click the "Immunize" button on the left side, and do this until you get the popup window that says "All known bad products already blocked".

7) Click the "Search and Destroy" button on the left side, and in the main window, click "check for problems" in the lower-left.

8) After your PC is scanned, select all items and delete them. Make sure you verify your immunity is up-to-date again (see step 6).

That's it for now. These two programs are the easiest to use, and when used in tandem, do a very good job of killing spyware (about a 85-90% ratio). One or the other used by itself, however, is very mediocre.

If you surf a lot, I'd recommend doing this once a week. Also, I have two more programs I keep to myself (I run four anti-spyware programs total) that I can assist you with. But running the above two should be sufficient. Lemme know if you need further assistance smile.gif

If you aren't sure what something does that's running in your task manager or at startup, search for it on google (or whereever). 99% of the time the first site that pops up is www.liutilities.com it will tell you what you need to know about that particular program.

let me know what it tells you.

It just says: Parasite Check completed. Nothing else.

I have tried all of the above with No success  What ever is causing the damn problem is soley related to IE browsing. They don't pop up unless I change a page or move forwards and back. How do I locate IE commands?

I have blocked the site with security, and it still pops up...this is the site(Don't Click!!!): http://194.237.110.186/randomsites/banner.aspx

go to www.theprolificmind.com/hijackthis.zip

download the program, and run it.

It shows you all of your registry entries. If you notice anything that doesnt look like a system enry, remove it.

If you are unsure, ask here, maybe someone can help or paste your logfile here:

http://www.hijackthis.de/

After that I recommend a remote anti-virus scan from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp (you will have to install their software, say yes to the trendmicro pop-up.

Thanks man...that worked. I had tried it before, but I didn't know they had a log site.
