...seriously! I went to the beautiful South side of the big D to pick up a boat. Man, I was I in culture shock! The guy I bought the boat from (black guy) wouldn't let me get out of his Explorer when we were driving around the ghetto trying to find a Notary. Black guy with a whie guy!! Huh? They were all sorts of confused! He said EVERYONE is on crack (this was his old hood, where he grew up). You should have seen the people FREAK out when I was rolling thru in the Crown Vic trying to finding his place. They didn't know what to do and the looks we got, were priceless! The guy escorted us back to the Freeway, ensuring our safety. I've never seen so much segregation in my entire life. I went into a Firestone to buy a trailer tire and these cats were nothing but nasty to me. It was 20 minutes before closing and they told me there compressors were off and the Techs were getting cleaned up to go home. This was AFTER I told him I had a bad tire was trying to get the boat back to Cbus. Wow!

 

I learned one thing, and that is if I lived in Detroit (south side ghetto) I'd be on Crack to!

i stayed right down from the cobo center when i went to the auto show, and it was pretty ghetto in the couple places i was in. i was suprised i didnt get shot, caus i was about the only white guy around and EVERYONE kept looking at me wierd like i did something wrong

Eh...I spent 4 years up there for school, and many years before that spent my early childhood. Detroit has fallen off in a lot of ways, especially when more and more auto companies packed up and moved out. But as far as the segregation and what not, it's basically just like Columbus. You've got your certain sections of Columbus that you just won't roll to alone because some people still feel like we're in the 1960's (and this holds true for people of all races.)

 

But the suburbs in Oakland County (metro Detroit) completely blow our suburbs away. Oakland County statistically has been the 2nd richest county in the U.S. for years, mainly due the fact that there are so many auto tech corridors within the county that keep money funneling in. There are houses out there that make our Muirfield look like the Hilltop.

 

 

::Cliffnotes:: Detroit is dirty and segregrated, but it's just like Columbus would be if Columbus had a few hundred thousand more people in it's city limits and companies like Nationwide and Ross Labs would pack up and leave.

Columbus is HARDLY much more diverse than Detroit, bro. First of all, Detroit is home to the nation's largest Arab community. Secondly, there is a huge hispanic community as well. I don't even need to mention that the percentage of people within the city limits are majority African-American, and yes...there are plenty of white people everywhere too. So, there goes your diversity argument.

 

Michigan is FAR from the most segregated state, unless you count the Upper Peninsula, which is mostly caucasian. But, just like Ohio, it has its melting pots as well as its hilljack towns that continue to live in the past because change is not important to them.

 

But let's not get on an argument about the racial tension here in metro Columbus, because there's plenty. Places like Grove City, Lancaster, Dublin, Pataskala, Pickerington... And if you want to discuss tensions within city limits, let's talk about the southwest side, the Hilltop, the Somali North side.....

Jesus Christ, Columbus is a fucking picnic compared to Detroit. The only places that rival Detroit that I have been to are Chicagos south side(including Gary, IN), West Philly, parts of NJ, and East St. Louis. I will go ANYWHERE in Cols. with no problem, but fuck those other cities.

 

I've been to Watts and Compton, CA; and they weren't as bad as the other cities I mentioned either.

After living in Flint for 4 years and being around Detroit for a while I am unfazed by ~90% of Columbus.

Everything from a Gypsy who we are still convinced put a curse on my buddy Marc for mocking her, to a pimp and when I say pimp I mean the definition of pimp. Without splitting hairs, I'll admit that you do raise a few good counterpoints, especially in regards to Mayor Kilpatrick's speeches. I lived up there long enough to hear plenty of those.

 

As far as the Hispanic population in the D...yes, based on numbers alone, they are larger than Columbus. Check out Mexicantown while you're up there, or head up to the far north end of the D to find this out.

 

You've raised a good point on Dearborn being the centerpiece of the Arab-American population, but that's a moot point when you look at the overall melting pot in metro Detroit.

 

And lastly, as far as your segregation argument goes, what you state about interaction is entirely correct, but the same mentalities hold true down here in Columbus, just on a smaller scale, seeing as this town does not have the same sized population as the D. White guys still get dirty stares just east of downtown, black guys still get dirty stares further west. It's just how it is. The interaction here really isn't great, but given the size difference, there are fewer publicized conflicts. But the areas in the metro area interact almost the same as they do down here. People in Bloomfield Hills act snobby, such as the Muirfield crowd down here. Waterford has a great interaction among the races for the most part, and Pontiac has gotten a lot better. I went to school in Rochester Hills, and interaction there would be about the same as a Gahanna or a Westerville here.

 

To bring dirty ass Flint into the mix wasn't even fair.

Columbus prides itself on its diversity. Our #1 minority population is Somalian. You could possibly say the East side is pominently black, but yet it has Bexley. We have a Columbus Culture Festival every year because of the diversity. We celebrate our diversity. The only place that I would consider segregated is the South side, which is mostly white. There are no "bad" areas of town. I'll ride over on Livingston and James, which is supposed to be our worst area of town, and not worry about anything. We don't have racial wars going on. Michigan sucks. The UP is the only part of Michigan that I like, and the bridge / tunnel to Cananda.

I saw a pimp like that hanging out at that school near OSU east hospital. Kinda funny considering theres a police barracks just behind the hospital too.

As part of my profession, I go all over Franklin county. And I mean EVERWHERE....there isn't a part of this town I haven't been in multiple times. Hell, I know where all the zip codes lie around here. There isn't a single place in Columbus I wouldn't go alone in during daylight hours (and I'm just your regular ol' white guy). Even bad areas like 43203, 43205, 43222 (mostly heavy-duty white trash there), uzzi alley (Bexley by James/Broad), Hilltop, parts of 43201 (campus zip), etc. Now at night time, there are a few areas I wouldn't be comfortable going thru on foot, but that's about it.

 

If you want diversity, Bexley would have by far the most in Franklin county. From the nastiest of neighborhoods all the way up to some of the nicest homes in town, and everything in between, Bexley has it all. I wouldn't dare live there, but it sure has plenty of diversty in an economic sense.
