mother board = $45 - but free with the purchase of you guessed it an athlon 64 3400+

athlon64 3400+ = $99

160gb hdd = $54

1 gig ddr = $95

dvd burner = $29

fx 5200 = $27

powmax case = $35

so.............if bought brand new from newegg today it would only run you....

$339

but please understand that WEAK ass graphics card will NOT PLAY anything within the last 2 years on anything but absolute minimum detail and low resolution

just depends on if you want to game on it or not......if so build a newer socket 939 or am2 system and get a pci-express graphics card

all of that is minus shipping and having someone build it for you though

i didn't count the xp install in on the price since it's probably hacked anyway

why don't you just say what you want the computer for and how much you wanna spend and i'll help you piece together a better system

and if you don't like my opnion of what i choose, then i'm sure others on here will give theirs soon enough

ok, thanks. I gotta do something and I need help. I am looking to spend around 400. I have a tower, harddrive, and cd/dvdrw drive. I would not mind to pay a little more and have a better looking tower though. Please tell me what I can get for this price.

A lot of internet browsing, streaming videos, downloads, and some rudimentary picture and video editing.

Graphics card does not need to be anything special as I really do not play games.

Thanks

so..you wanna salvage you hd and dvd burner? how big is your hd?

that will save a few bucks

since you do some editing i would sugget getting a dual core chip since it will in general, run miltiple apps\threads at once MUCH better. but for now lets just mention a few setups.....i'm not gonna look for a case, that's all preference

with video editing in mind dont skimp on the video card or ram either. Dont just rely on the cpu to handle it all. It can get you by, but sooner than later you will wish you spent the few extra bucks to make it that much better than having to do 2 upgrades

Dammit, why does everyone think that the video card does something when it comes to video (or even photo!) editing? Unless you get something with a built-in hardware MPEG coproc (which you will *NOT* find at Microcenter/BestBuy/CompUSA), the video card does JACK SHIT for editing. It's all in the CPU, RAM, and HDD. If you're doing video, you want

1. Huge ass amount of RAM. 4GB if you're running XP-32, motherboard max if you're running XP-64.

2. Monstrous CPU. Intel Core Duo if you've got the $$$, Athlon64 if you don't.

3. Fast hard drive. 15k Fujitsu MAU or Maxtor Atlas RAID-5 if you've got $$$, Western Digital Raptor SATA RAID-5 if you've only got $$ (either hanging off LSI MegaRAID controllers), a single Raptor for those with $, and 7200rpm if you're a po' college student. Don't cripple yourself with a BIOS RAID card like the Highpoint 1640. You'll also note I'm skipping RAID-0 (which is actually a bit faster) in favor of safety. The RAID-5 lets any single drive die and you won't lose data.

i have the same case and to be honest its a "ok" case. the drive bay flips open on all four drive bays but its the tiniest spring and they break really easy. ive had mine for a year and the flippy part broke after 4 months. if u do get it concider a new case and put the guts in the new one. but over all its a nice pc. but NOT uber sweet like mine. haha

First off, the topic starter stated that he has a budget of ~$400 for new hardware, not ~$4000. Secondly many of the new mainstream graphics cards will infact assist with video converting and editing. The entire Radeon X1K line features AVIVO which apparently is supposed to assist with encoding and decoding video. Apparently it's up to 4 times faster than CPU alone. Thirdly, since I doubt Ponyfreak works with Pixar, I'm sure he would get along just fine with 2GB of RAM. And finally, since he has stated that he is on a budget, an integrated Raid-0 would be a good solution.
