I have a tower, harddrive, and cd/dvdrw drive. I would not mind to pay a little more and have a better looking tower though. Please tell me what I can get for this price. A lot of internet browsing, streaming videos, downloads, and some rudimentary picture and video editing. Graphics card does not need to be anything special as I really do not play games. Unless you get something with a built-in hardware MPEG coproc (which you will *NOT* find at Microcenter/BestBuy/CompUSA), the video card does JACK SHIT for editing. It's all in the CPU, RAM, and HDD. If you're doing video, you want 1. Huge ass amount of RAM. 4GB if you're running XP-32, motherboard max if you're running XP-64. 2. Monstrous CPU. Intel Core Duo if you've got the $$$, Athlon64 if you don't. 3. Fast hard drive. 15k Fujitsu MAU or Maxtor Atlas RAID-5 if you've got $$$, Western Digital Raptor SATA RAID-5 if you've only got $$ (either hanging off LSI MegaRAID controllers), a single Raptor for those with $, and 7200rpm if you're a po' college student. Don't cripple yourself with a BIOS RAID card like the Highpoint 1640. You'll also note I'm skipping RAID-0 (which is actually a bit faster) in favor of safety. Secondly many of the new mainstream graphics cards will infact assist with video converting and editing. The entire Radeon X1K line features AVIVO which apparently is supposed to assist with encoding and decoding video. Apparently it's up to 4 times faster than CPU alone. Thirdly, since I doubt Ponyfreak works with Pixar, I'm sure he would get along just fine with 2GB of RAM.
