GTO question

hey guys, i'm just starting to do some research on GTO's. i'm looking to get one next fall, and i want an '05-06. i've heard people buying them brand new for around $25k. i went to the local pontiac dealership to look at/test drive one with my wife, and had a bad experience. the salesman was pretty annoying--first, he was a little inaccurate in describing the drivetrain--i didn't call him out, just told him i knew everything about the car's drivetrain, and was more interested in the interior specifications. he was treating me like some moron who had no idea what the car was, so i told him i had two mustangs at home--before i could finish the sentence, he told me this would smoke any mustang on the road. :asshole:

he then told me that the price could go no lower than $29,500. the kicker was when i asked him if i could take it for a test drive, he told me that they treat these cars like corvettes, and don't let people test drive them if they're not going to buy them.

the interaction ended with me giving him his card back, but not before telling him i was looking for a quick, comfortable daily driver, not a corvette, and that both my mustangs would beat the GTO.

i'm still interested in getting one if i can talk the wife into it. so who's buying these cars new for $25k?? maybe i can find a low mileage '05 in a year for $20k??

sorry for the long winded vent, i can't stand going to dealerships and wasting my time.

thanks guys. neither of my mustangs are stock, but my '04 (when stock) would edge out a GTO. the point was that even if i owned a mustang GT, this dick wouldn't even let me finish my sentence before saying that the GTO would lay waste to both my cars--insulting someone is not a way to gain their business. you should have seen the look on his face when i handed him his card back.

the thing that pissed me off the most was that my wife was slightly happy that i didn't get to test drive it--she wants me to get an SUV.

aw man, fuck an suv.

yeah, i feel you about the salesman, i have spent considerable time in sales, so i think id have handed him his card back as well.

here ya go, some things i love about my gto...

27 mpg on the freeway, 21 during regular driving.

red leather interior, black car. thats hot.

this sounds odd, because its kind of a subtle car, but i get looks on the road all the time.

400 horses. uh...need i say more?

the ls2 has so much freaking power potential that i could do almost anything to my car.

theres some other stuff, too, but i dont want to type. if you want to take one for a drive, lets go have lunch sometime.

I'll cover you, dj. I drove my friends GTO when he was too tipsy to drive back from campus, the torque downlow is there, and you can save considerable amounts of gasoline because you can shift so low. And the six speed, what is it, the tremec? Butter baby! one of the smoothest trannies I've ever shifted.

i actually like the way they look, and of course the powertrain is magnificent. this will be a daily driver, no major mods for now (intake, exhaust only), i have the cobra that is for mods, and weekend fun. i've heard the seats are great, and the salesman actually let me sit in the car, if you could believe that--what a dickhead.

part of the reason he probably didn't let me drive it, was the fact that my wife was trying to talk me into a denali.

regardless, i will hopefully be in the market next fall--i'm trying to eek out another 9 months from my '90 grand prix, which my wife now refuses to even ride in.

my kids 89 GT eats em at Trails... except for one that is out there and runs low 12's most are running 13, 13.2.

A real GTO to me is a '65 4 speed tri power 389!

Meanwhile, I drive a Expedition but would love to have a new Goat.

Go for it... Ron

yeah, my wrx was actually faster in the quarter. the problem the gto's have (in terms of the strip) is an irs, and the fact that you cant put much tire underneath them. not trying to start a flame war or anything, but from a 20 or 40 roll, i would be suprised if the result would be the same. ive had a few stangs get after me on the freeway (new ones, mind you) and they werent up to the task.

What dealer was this??

I tried to test drive one a few months ago at a Pontiac dealer on the West side off of Broad near 270. Mind you I pulled up in my Avalanche, told the guy I had just paid it off (lie) and wanted to get another toy, but hadn't had a chance to look at the GTO yet. Both me and my g/f were nicely dressed (well, she always is), and the most I got was being allowed to drive it around the parking lot. But the sales guy was so crappy he didn't even give us his name until we left.

same place, same story. drove up in the '05 eddie bauer explorer. we were going to dinner, so we were wearing nicer clothes. they had 2 of them--a black one, and a red one. the salesman actually tried to tell me some guy bought one last week at MSRP!--i hate it when people try to blow smoke up my ass. i've been a mustang fan for a while, and thought i'd go for a change, since i'm not the biggest fan of the new body style--and the GTO seems the best vehicle with an LS motor to suit my needs (daily driver)

i've heard the GTO's are difficult to launch with their tires. that's something i'm used to with my cobra (i still have the stock tires on the car). i need drag radials badly.

to the previous poster, i may check out Roby automotive, but i'm not looking to buy the car at this time--i just want to look one over--and feel how it drives--but who knows, that's what i said about my cobra when i bought it (i should say the wife let me buy it) on a whim.

on my 'to-do' list was to drive to a dealer in my '66 GTO and see if they'd let me take a test drive

...you'd think they'd let people if the driving experience is so impressive...and such an important sales point

...might scratch that off - not worth the headache of dealing with a pushy salesman

I remember the center of the '66 GTO sales brochure. I was 17 and almost had my dad talked into one but the freakin salesman told my dad that was a bad idea.

All the GTO's, even in POOR condition are starting to bring big bucks. I would do a '65 if I could find one.

How bout a ride!

Ron
