Sounds like the clutch is out of adjustment. If you have a firewall adjuster give it a few turns counter-clockwise, if you just have a stock quadrant pull up on the clutch pedal and you should feel the stock adjuster ratchet a few clicks. Sometimes they wear out and wont hold adjustment and then its time for a nice 3 hook quadrant and adjuster (with a new OEM cable, not an aftermarket POS adjustable).

I do have a firewall adj. I'll give that a try, thanks for the info. I also seem to have that classic problem of the raking/slight grind when shifting too fast into 2nd. Like you said, a rebuild may be in order in the near future. Where could I get that done just outta curiousity?
