Saw this for sale and stopped to check it out and take pics. Has 220k miles, and is the m6 w/ a 5spd. No idea on the year of the car. Going tomorrow for a test drive and to hear it run. etc. also is black on black which is a plus.

Out in Baltimore Ohio right? I drove by and looked at that thing a few months back. NOT an M6, has a M30B35 and not the wonderful S38B35, altho i did not look under the hood, as i saidi just happened to drive by it.

BMW made an m635csi as well as an m535is that are just standard cars with M tech body goodies.

If it happens to have an S38 im going to throw myself into traffic that i didnt consider buying it

In the US and Japanese markets, the M635CSi was renamed the M6, while Europe kept the M635CSi designation. The distinguishing mark between the M6 and M635CSi is the engine, for the M6 always contains the S38B35 engine, while the M635CSi can have either the S38B35 engine or the M88/3. Most of the E28 M5 and E24 M635CSi models in Europe were equipped with the M88/3 engine, without the catalyst.

The production of the BMW E28 5 Series ceased at the end of 1987, succeeded by the BMW E34. Soon after the introduction of the E34, a Motorsport version became available, the E34 M5. The engine that powered the E34 M5 is a further evolution of the S38B35 engine which powered the catalyst versions of both the E28 M5 and E24 M635CSi.

The E24 M635CSi remained in production until the Spring of 1989. During that time, the M88/3 and S38B35 engines were produced by BMW Motorsport alongside the S38B36. This benefited the last E24 M635CSI's because in their final production months, both the M88/3 and S38B35 engines received the duplex timing chain of the S38B36.

Be very careful on this one. Kidneyboy is likely correct that something is not correct.

They never brought the car to America as the M635csi, it was just badged the M6. Check the car over VERY closely to make sure that someone didn't just give their 635csi the M trim treatment. The 635csi will have the 180hp M30 engine which will be a major letdown if you're hoping for the S38.

Of course it's also possible that someone along the way thought that the european badge was cooler than the American M6 badge so they just replaced it with the current one.

Either way it could be a very cool project...especially with FI, but make sure you're getting what you want up front.

17 year old luxury sport coupe? old car = new problem's. The upkeep on something like that has to be crazy expensive. Even if you get to the point for FI you'll be breaking old, rare, and expensive parts all the time. Dont get me wrong, i love that car and its a steal for 1100 for a RUNNING car, but it just looks like a money pit. Not trying to rain on your parade just offering a different point of view, Goodluck either way man.

M30 motors are bullet proof and VERY easy to work on. The suspension on the E24 is shared with a E28 [83-88.5 5 Series] and can be rebuilt/replaced for very little money. The big bucks replacement items are interior and body parts, not to mention the difficulty in finding said replacement parts used.

yea its definatly not an s38. it had this motor:

http://www.bigcoupe.com/cars/blkshark/new/engine.jpg

(this isnt a picture of the actual motor, but one that looks like it)

it runs, but runs rich? any ideas? some of the interior bits are missing. well the right door panel. its also missing the right window motor. but all the other ones work as does the sunroof. Electrical wise, the power seats kinda work. the gears are popped out on the drivers side seat, so the seat back doesn't go forward or back. Its got some minor rust. none in the trunk none around the suspension bits. but it does have some right behind the side skirts, which eli thought might be the frame. once the engine cleared out a bit it ran good. it'll defiantly need new fluids and plugs/wires

Only 'bug' motronic 1.1 had was a high idle issue. if it dosent have that then it may just need a tune up. Interior bits... well, get looking. As for parts [any bmw parts for that matter] try the sites listed below.
