I am sure some people will find this totally crazy. I use a Double-Edged (DE) Safety Razor. Seems to be a good trade off between expensive cartridge razors and dangerous straight razors. Dirt cheap razor blades. Super close shave. Anyone else try this? I was sick of paying so much money for the Mach3 one day I went and and found all this info on the internet. RedRocket1647545505 Posted January 23, 2008 Report Share Posted January 23, 2008 I got into DE shaving about 6 months ago, starting with a Merkur HD, which is what everyone recommended as a first. So far, I'm far from impressed. I can get much closer, and have much less nicks with my Mach 3. I've tried 5 types of blades as well, Feather being the best. But i will admit, all the stuff is pretty cool. Just not worth all the injuries i would undoubtably suffer from. I've never nicked myself using a modern multi-blade razor. It takes me about 8 minutes to shave, from the time I wash my beard at the sink before lathering until I splash on the aftershave. This is for a three-pass shave (with the grain, across the grain, and against the grain), relathering between passes. (With the single-blade razor, the idea is to go for progressive stubble reduction rather than trying to achieve a smooth shave in one fell swoop.) When I first started, though, it did take me longer---twice as long, at least. But, as with most things, one's skills improve with practice. The big difference for me is not the savings on the blades. (I use a blade that costs 11.5¢ and lasts for 5 or 6 shaves: a big savings over $3.50 for a Fusion cartridge.) Nor is it that I get a better shave and my skin seems happier. The BIG difference is that I now enjoy shaving in the morning. Instead of a routine or a chore, it's actually something I look forward to. For me (who used to skip shaving whenever I could), that's very nice. I practically never get a nick or cut. It's called a safety razor for a reason. Nicks are generally caused by one or more of the following: Bad lather or prep (not very common) Incorrect blade angle: too steep (most likely cause) Too much pressure (second most likely---especially for new shavers who are used to shaving with a multiblade cartridge: they get in the habit of bearing down) Bad blade (rare) Bad blade for the shaver (fairly common) The oddity about double-edged blades is that a brand that works great for one shaver can be terrible for another shaver, and vice versa. This DE razor seems like you would not have the same level of not cutting my head as what a regular multi blade razor would. Is this just a facial thing? The recommended first razor for a new shaver is the Merkur Hefty Classic (aka "HD"), which if new costs around $33 for chrome, $39 for gold. And you can find razors cheaper than that... This DE razor seems like you would not have the same level of not cutting my head as what a regular multi blade razor would.
