ImUrOBGYN
Five stupid weapons that were actually made They say that human progress is undeniable - we’re alway thinking up new ways to kill one another. Patrick
Heh. Starving dogs attacking tanks. This one's pretty dumb...Ontos, basically a huge, "maneuverable" gun that blew up whenever a firecracker came near it. Navigating it was like trying to get the Titanic down the Olentangy...ain't gonna happen. Supposedly, there was a small-yield nuclear version made. Still very cool. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/34/Ontos.jpg

Scotty2Hotty
Is that yours? Unfortunately no, I've been trying to get one for a little bit. They air dropped them to the Frog underground in WW2, and gave to OSS guys as a last resort. Pretty cool little piece, I just can't find one. RedRocket1647545505
The FP-45 Liberator was one hell of an effective weapon, and not a dumb idea in the least. The idea behind them was that if you could get close enough, you could pop someone in the head, and take their gun. FP-45 > no gun at all. GonneVille
Those little bastards actually did for a fair number of Nazis...two or three guys walk up to Nazis on guard duty, bang, bang, pick up rifle and ammo, run like hell...

Your maximum effective range with a fist sized rock is more than 25 ft. You "could" pop them in the head, as long as it were accurate. The rock makes less noise, btw. In the end, the only real benifit was tha simple act of putting a gun in the hands of a frog and giving him some confidence. Bat bombs Those actually had some success, IIRC. Oh, and confidence is one of it's main purposes. Can't win a war when you're working with a bunch of pussies.

Scotty2Hotty
Do they make IWB holsters for those? They should, I just heard the liberators were going for upward of $3K with the instructions. I'd take a single shot .45ACP over knife/rock anyday of the week. 230 grains of goodness to your dome piece, won't leave much but pure squishy head syndrome. Avenger1647545502
Liberators never made it to Europe. The Brits were sneaking in a HUGE number of Sten sub-machine guns into France, mostly using night landings in farm fields with Le Resistance assistance. There were other weapons as well, mostly Bren LMGs and SMLE Mk.IIIs, but the Sten was popular because the Germans used 9mm as well, and it was very easy to break down for hiding. A very few were smuggled (not airdropped) into Korea for use against the Japanese, one of which showed up in the hands of a NVA soldier in 1967. There were probably only a few dozen that escaped being dumped into the ocean after the war. There was a range report on some shooters boards last year, the gentleman reported being "REALLY nervous" after the first shot recocked the firing pin due to primer over-penetration. He also reported it wasn't very accurate at all.
