1990 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4x4 - $2000

Recommended Posts

I recently "updated" to a newer Cherokee that I am forcing myself to leave stock in an effort to retain some gas mileage, handling and such but still be able to load up and go into the woods camping…

Anyway – the time has come to part with this one to make room in the driveway. You'd be hard pressed to find something better for getting you around no matter where you need to go. It's got a lot of miles but the engine is a Napa reman that (as I recall) has only 30-40K. I have all the paperwork from the engine swap and receipts with mileage, so I can verify this, but I think that's close. There are a lot of random "quirks" that it exhibits that are normal for it's age and mileage, but there is no reason that it wouldn't go another 100K with basic servicing. I'm actually already starting to regret buying another one when this one's paid off and has been very dependable.

Specs:

180K Miles

4.0L Auto

4x4 – Has both Part-Time as well as Full-Time (Selec-Trac)… Full-time is perfect for winter.

Rebuilt engine

Working AC

Overhead console with compass and outside temp

Power locks and windows (although the lock mechanisms need lubed, they're stiff)

Leather interior - Gray (kinda' rough and torn in a couple of places, but decent and comfortable)

CD Player (Panasonic? – don’t remember)

Lifted ~3" – Rusty's Offroad 3" lift kit installed 4-5 years ago including shocks

30" BFG Long Trail T/As (great wearing and awesome in the snow and light mud)

Full-size spare (same tire on stock wheel)

Cragar Black Soft 8 Wheels

JEGS Catback exhaust

Cargo Liner

Interior Tool Box – sits opposite the spare tire

Hitch

New brakes all around - Hawk Pads in front (better stopping - kinda squeaky)

"Custom Paint" ;) – was painted yellow when I bought it – added black to bottom. It's got a lot of runs, but I think it looks okay and it's just rough enough you don’t mind using it like a truck… something I'll miss.

"Issues"

Idles a little low when warm, causing it to run kinda rough (not badly, and only at idle) The IAC needs replaced and maybe the TPS – both are cheap, I just haven't done it because it gets around just fine – it's just an annoyance more than anything.

Noise at speed, some of it's the tires, but I think that the wheel bearings will need replaced sometime soon.

Steering is somewhat vague and makes a popping sound occasionally. This is mostly due to a worn steering box. I have a newer one from a low mileage '95 that I'll include with the Jeep.

It has power seats, but they stopped working about a year ago. I suspect corroded wiring but haven’t tried to diagnose it. The power locks cycle, but often the locks must be worked manually because they're just stiff enough the solenoids won’t kick them over. Lubing the mechanism will likely fix this (It's common with these). It has a cruise control knob, but the box for the cruise control was bypassed when I got it – I haven’t tried to reinstall it, but I'll leave it in there.

Fuel gauge is off – 1/8 tank is about empty. I usually just fill up around 1/2 tank for good measure. This is fixable, it just didn’t bother me enough to fix.

Rust – under the doors where they commonly rust and a good size rust through hole has formed under the rear passenger door. Unfortunately these things rust, but it's basically comsmetic – it's still a very durable vehicle. Many Cherokees in this condition are known to still be going well into the 300K mark.

Overall it's a bit rough around the edges but most of its annoyances are fixable and it has honestly been one of the most dependable and versatile vehicles I have owned – which is why it has been replaced by another Cherokee. It has actually been my only vehicle since I sold my Mustang last year. I'll update with more pics later. I don't have any recent pics here at work.

Here it is before I swapped to the Cragar Wheels:

Free bumpola.

This or an old 4runner is exactly what I've been wanting/needing. Too bad I'm so broke ass right now. :(

Yeah, it seems like I chose the worst time to sell it. There are several people that had been hounding me to let them know if I ever sell it, and now that it's for sale they're all broke. Damn the economy and such! ;)
