The the real nutcracker. I pulled the TOP ring off and squared it up in the bore and measured the gap .025

So then I pulled the BOTTOM ring and measured it .030??? So I look at it closer and I can see the word top stamped in the bottom ring!!!!! So I go the next piston and its the same thing. This dumass engine builder put the rings in the wrong groove. No wonder I always had trouble with excess crankcase pressure!!!.

Its really not uncommon to have a larger 2nd ring gap than the top ring to relive inter ring pressure. Nascar engine builders were the guys that found out or so I read many many years ago. It helps keep the top ring seated down by releasing the pressure between the top ring and the second ring. The old way of thinking for horsepower was to keep the second ring gap smaller to create a better seal with less loss of compression but Nascar guys found out the opposite to be true. You can decrease ring flutter.

Sometimes the rings can say top on either the top or second ring , its that the second ring has a step or angle on the inside bottom edge which denotes the ring from top and bottom.

Don't know if thats the case Ray.

Paul,

I almost bought an incon twin turbo kit 5 years ago so I have always been on the fence about buying a turbo.

Brian,

I always pulled my timing manualy with the laptop.

I always ran two different tunes, One N/A another for the gas.

I heard got a new car? Got any pics?

That actually was the case. After reading more about It saw that many builders do this now. What threw me was the build sheet showed them to be the opposite. But the second ring was in the correct place. I do think that .025 and .030 was a little much for the ring gap. I think I will close that up to .020 and .025 on this one.

Brian I do have another Trans Am In the shop  I will post some pictures tonight.

Kenny The injectors have been spoken for. I will let you know if they fall through.

I will be posting progress pictures of the turbo kit very soon. The headers look great!

.020 is a little tight for a big boost turbo motor depending on piston material and bore. I'd look into that. The difference as far as face area exposed between .020 and .025 (what i normally run) is negligible.

I would also look into it and call both the ring and piston manufacturers.

The cage will be done up north, I was going to install a Wolfe cage kit myself, but Shearer made me an offer I couldnt refuse.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions I value all of your opinions!

I do have a hookup with a piston manufacturer, I will start working again on the engine again soon.

I got behind on the engine when my son got hurt on November 22nd, He was in the hospital for two weeks so that put the car way on the back burner for almost a month. He is doing well right now and should return to work this month.

Sorry to hear about your son, I hope it wasn't anything serious.

Have you found a good machine shop to take care of your block yet? I will be doing mine here real soon.

Last picture is a test fit with my new street tires, M&H drag radials 390/40/17

I should have my pistons next week, I need to order my valve springs and start on my heads this week
