1996 Subaru Impreza GM6 EJ22T Swap

MS came in today, so now I can start working on the harness adapter.

Yesterday I went to Pick n Pull and pulled another ECU out of a late nineties Outback. I wanted to do a better job harvesting this ECU connector. So, with the help of Alex, a blowtorch, and a knife, we desoldered the connector from the board. Today I trimmed that connector down in preparation for turning it in to an adapter, and picked up a few items to make the jumpers.

Tomorrow the turbo crossmember is supposed to come in. In addition, on Friday I went to Byers and ordered a 36-2-2-2 STi crank trigger wheel, so I guess I have committed to that setup now. It basically simplifies the ignition setup, by only having the ECU have to take one ignition input, instead of 1 from the crank and 1 from the cam. The timing belt has to come back off anyway, I am replacing the plastic cam gear on the passenger side with a metal one from the old 2.2.

 

As far as the motor as a whole goes, its just about ready to go back in. I forgot to buy a clutch, so that will happen this week. I think for now I am just going to go with a stock 91 Legacy turbo clutch.

Failed to mention that I also picked up an Exhaust header this weekend, so with that, my entire exhaust system is complete.

Saturday Pat, dunno if Erica told you but I am sick/recovering lol. Should be able to wrench I hope.

 

Meh, I hadn't picked up the crank gear yet anyway, so the only thing we could have done would have been the crossmember, and thats not that much work. lol

Realized I hadn't updated the thread in a while. Just haven't really thought about it, but I have got a lot of things done on the car.

 

Cleaned out the bellhousing of the transmission that was coated in oil, and put in the new turbo engine crossmember from a 1991 Legacy Turbo.

I also swapped out the crank gear with one from an STi, which is a 36-2-2-2 setup, allowing me to only have to run one ignition input, as opposed to two with the stock Subaru 6 teeth/7 teeth setup (one from the cam, one from the crank).

I also took the flywheel off of the old motor, to get it resurfaced at O'reilys.

As for new parts, I got the last major new part I needed, a fresh clutch kit from Sachs.

Now its going to be buying lots of bolts from the hardware store and gaskets from various parts stores.

 

...and I have to finish the MS harness still, but its about 85% done.

This weekend, I took the butterfly's out of the TGV's. Too cheap to do a full gutting right now, but I will get to it eventually. I also went to the hardware store and bought all of the hardware necessary to attach the TGV's and intake manifold to the motor. I also went ahead and attached the TGV's while I was at it.

Also, due to a prior fuckup regarding the passenger side cam gear, I installed a new one from the dealership, and put the motor back in time.

And finally, thanks to James at O'Riley's, my flywheel has been resurfaced.

I didn't take any pictures of it, but I also worked underneath the car on the currently broken shifter linkage support. Basically, when I was replacing the shifter bushings, I sheered off a bolt that supports the shifter, so I will likely have to come up with something to fix that problem, probably Dremel the old one off and replace it with a long bolt.

 

Current plan is to put the motor back in the car next weekend, and hook most everything back up. Still waiting on a few parts. I have an 03 WRX throttle body with a built in IAC and a set of stock STi sidefeed injectors lined up. I am probably going to wait till last to finish wiring up the MS harness. There isn't that much work left on it. If I get some time this week, which is unlikely, I will take a shot at getting it finished.

This weekend's goal was to get the motor in the car. We started out by making some modifications to the intake manifold to get it to work with these heads. The EJ25 SOHC intake ports are about 2 mm wider than on a DOHC turbo car. As such, we had to drill the holes just a tad larger to get it to sit on the TGV's. The Sean set about making some modifications to the fuel lines to get them to fit better on the NA heads.

 

We then suspended the motor using the hoist, and we attached the flywheel and clutch to the motor, torquing everything to the right specs.

 

Sean then had to leave, and from there Pat took over helping me get the motor in the car. So there it is, however, we actually need to take it out again to install a throwout bearing retainer. That won't take any time,as the motor is just sitting in there.

I basically didn't do anything this weekend on the car. Saturday we went to go see Back to the Future at AMC, and seeing that movie in the theater is something I have always wanted to do. Sunday I just took it easy, haven't given myself a weekend off in a long time. That doesn't mean, however, that I didn't receive any useful parts.

 

I was working fairly hard on getting my harness right to make the Megasquirt interface with the Subaru. The only other guy in the universe who has a MS Subaru was selling his harness on RS25, so I bought it from him, because it has been tested and is known to work. So thats one less thing I have to worry about on the car.

Motor is back out while I try to solve my throwout bearing issue, but now I have a throttle body I need. Its an 03 WRX Thottle body, which has the IAC valve on the throttle body itself.

Just thought I would toss an update in here, since I haven't in a few weeks. I am waiting on fuel injectors before I continue on the project. Sure there is stuff I could be doing, but I've been giving myself a few weekends off because I was spending the majority of my freetime in the garage. I picked up some injector seals and a throttle body gasket, but thats the majority of the progress I've made the past couple weeks.
