Anyone know anything about these cars, or have one of there own?

After I sold my Lightning last year ive been considering buying another car, I just dont know what to get. Been considering one of these as I'm a fan of diesel engines. I assume its just like the trucks, open up the exhaust/air intake, then chip it??

Any advise is needed, Thanks

Pretty much, yes.

All depends on generation what you will end up doing, the older 1.9 TDi's also some injector options. :D

The new 2.0TDI is common rail, so you're basically a stop at CHIP. :)

No common rail, a little too much coin for me.

It will be a 1.9 Golf if I end up getting one.

Injectors you say;)

TDI's are cool. I remember when they first came out and the timing belt had to be done at 30K miles, until enough people bitched up a storm and they came out with a 60K belt.

Front strut bearing plates will be shot, they are never solid on these things. If you can move the suspension up and down more than an inch I recommend replacing them. Any other car it would seem horrible. A little less than an inch is normal.

Since nobody actually drives these things the aluminum intakes get INCREDIBLY clogged up with carbon buildups, like when you pull the intake tube off the intake manifold, you may be able to just stick a pencil through the hole through the middle of the buildup. It's crazy.

Otherwise, they aren't that bad. People like to hold onto them until their repair bills surpass the value of the car, then they dump them. That's the unfortunate thing about them. Most of them you will find are 1 owner cars usually, but they have more than 150K miles and need service.

More gold from Davidsfarm, VW Turbo Diesel Caravan. Has nothing really to do with modern TDI's, but still awesome. This is only a few of the videos about his Diesel Caravan, and just his new one. He has a whole bunch about his old one too.

The 1.9L IDI does slightly better on fuel than the 2.0 direct injection with bluetec.

They don't feel very slow but are pretty slow on paper. I've got a friend with a 1.9, boost is up, it has the european injection jets, no egr, running fully mechanical, entertaining car.

I believe this dude tunes diesel VWs and he's local.

Right. Jon's used to be pretty big into the tdi's, and had a successful tdi rally car. The newer ones with the dsg's seem to blow up when you mod them, but those are for soccer moms. My stepmom has an 06 and gets 40-45mpg all the time.

+1 on the carbon buildup though, I've seen what he's talking about and it's crazy! I really don't think they're worth the premium they bring over the gas models if you buy used. I'd only get a tdi if it were new, because they hold their resale too well to be a good used buy.

diesel power did an article on the car, very cool!

the engine actually doesn't have much done to it at all, and it's putting out 370lb-ft!

I've had a 2005 TDI Golf since new. Just turned 119K today. I put a bigger turbo,(bolt on from Garrett), and had it tuned via email from KermaTDI.com with a programmer they sell to flash the ECU.

Like posted earlier, go to tdiclub.com.

That said, get a 2003 or older. The 2004-2005 are problematic if someone used the non 505.01 oil. If the wrong oil is used, the cam will wipe and clog the oil line to the turbo adding up to an expensive repair bill. ($675 for cam, $8 for each one-time use head bolt, and so on.)

The previous model, (ALH), can take Rotella all day long and many-o-mod without any trouble.

Timing belts are every 90K nowdays and it's not that bad to do IMO.

With my upgrades and the stock MAP, I have surprised a stock VR6 GTI and a 330 CI...they still outran me, lol, but the old TDI did shock them in first and second gear. I average 46 mpg too!

Plan on adding the 3 bar here this summer and getting a new tune.

Cliffs-TDI's are great if you want to become a VW diesel expert.

(EDIT)- and the carbon build up issue is a SIMPLE FIX...remove the EGR, fab up block off plates, no more build up..EVER.
