05 Grand Caravan - Rack & Pinion swap.

So, I finally threw the wife's van up on some stands and found her power steering leak. It's leaking out of both boots on the R&P.

Can someone find a detailed writeup for this job? I've been looking for a while on-line, and can't find a decent writeup. I have access to the tools, but if this thing is a monster, I don't want to deal with the damn thing / spend a whole day laying on a creeper.

Any shops want to give an estimate?

Thanks.

1. siphon as much fluid as possible

2. lock the wheels straight ahead

3. disconnect coupler at inter. shaft under dash

4. remove wheels

5. remove front evap canister

6. remove one hose from ps cooler and drain fluid

7. remove 2 bolts in ps cooler to crossmember

8. remove outer tie rod ends

9 remove leak detection pump to crossmember reinforcement bolts

10.remove lower control arm bushing bolts(rear)

11. remove crossmember bolts to subframe. lower the rear bushings, then the reinforcement

12.remove lines from steering gear

13. remove 3 bolts and nuts holding the steering gear to the frame

14. move rack down to access roll pin in steering shaft and remove

14a.TIP. there is an access plate right under the brake pedal to get to this.

15. separate coupler from rack

16. remove rack

summarized instructions from mitchell...F* not being able to copy and paste from there. says 4.3 hrs.. take your time, and buy a case of beer.

Thanks. More or less the same as I have found. Threw a bottle of Lucas PS Stop Leak in her tonight; not optimistic about it making any difference.

clay there are a couple tsb's about noise for these vans..

first off the overflow bottle has a screen in it that get clogged drain fluid and clean it)

and second the return hose running the ps cooler is too small and needs upsized one bigger(7/16" from 3/8" maybe..i forget)

Yep, found both of these last night.

In our case, it only gets loud when the level gets low (imagine that).

Clay, I am sure - like everything else that breaks - I will try the fix myself. I think I am just going to take the approach of taking "extra" things out my way to make God's plenty of room. I only get frustrated when trying to do car brain surgery through a 1/2" opening. :(

If you want to "learn" on your van and then do it on my van, that's cool. Why do we both need to learn to do this jerb? :)

Sure. :)

The only part that has me worried is getting the pin out that holds the shaft to the rack and pinion. We'll see...
