for a bare-bones build you will need:

-Case

-Motherboard

-Processor

-Hard Drive (just spend a little more $ and get a 750GB or 1TB)

-Memory (at least 2GB, 4GB should be good)

-Power supply (many cases come with these preinstalled)

-Operating system (or just download this)

edit: and you should also have a DVD drive

You can probably even get rid of the mouse/keyboard from that to save some bucks if he already has a set

My HTPC has a new Intel core i5. I could not be UNhappier with its performance. My next build will be AMD.

Cost: performance ratio, the Athlon II's are fantastic.

so are the atholn II's good then? What about the i5 don't you like. (may be obvious but idk).

search for i5 graphics driver, likely hasnt been updated. an i3 can decode bluray flawlessly, no reason an i5 cant.

First, get more memory. Windows 7 likes to have atleast 3. More the better in this case. Also, i would recommend getting a mobo for ddr3 memory rather than older memory style ddr2. Lastly, i would recommend an Intel over a AMD proc. Even the i3 proc is more efficient and faster than a similar amd procs. Check out tomshardware.com as stated earlier.

I understand about the ddr3, but why does everyone hate and? I'm getting a faster processor that an i3 for less money. The guys at micro center said the and stuff isn't bad

i run 4 gigs of ddr2 on vista 7 with a amd quad core 2.5ghz on a gigabyte board and it runs everything fine (everything as in games, starcraft 2 etc, counter strike) . also got a 512mb graphics card and a 800wat power supply.
