I need help, I'm a total noob at designing stuff and I need a custom business card laid out.

I've been using a crappy template from vistaprint.com but so doesn't everyone else;-)

I messed around with it awhile back and came up with this so far. Any ideas?

I must say sorry in advance but thats terrible. Not that I have a business card at all and/or could make a better one but it does not flow well. Since your doing photography I would get rid of the cloudy blue background and go with a flat color that maybe pops out at you. As for your logo PBE its too messy and hard to read IMO..

I feel like if I were to see this card as a representation of your photography I would feel it was amateurish personally.

Yeah I know what your saying, you can totally tell I don't know anything about design.

On a better note after looking at your website, I really like the style in some of your pictures. Your business card needs to reflect that IMO.

^^^ agree. Why not use one of the photos from your site? The one of the couple in the stream is pretty cool. Just ad your logo/contact info in a contrasting white on the dark part of the picture.

The picture on the card will speak volumes. Heck, PM that pic file with your logo and I'll throw an idea at you just for the fun of it.

(Sorry for the double post - I wanted to add the last part)

Maybe something like this? I like the vertical format. Although the text doesn't pop out at you, the photo does and IMO that's what counts for your business.

I couldn't use the logo file as is, but I tried to simulate the three letters as close as I could.

BTW - before you go the Vistaprint route I use a small printing business called RedRabbit in Urbana for our business cards. (I have a small landscaping service) I simply send them a pdf file and a day or two later they have the cards ready. Last time we bought some we got 1000 full color cards (one side) for just under $90. The quality is very high. Before that I used Vistaprint and got tired of the non-stop junk mail they send. If you want I'll send you they're contact info.

If you like it the way it is then (I think...) all you need to do is copy the pdf file I had sent in the PM and send it off to a printer. If there is something you would want changed let me know and I may be able to do it. I'm not a graphics guy, but I like to fiddle around with the basic programs just for the fun of it sometimes.

The PBE Logo is much better, its nice to have the picture, but I do wonder if the text gets lost.... maybe the pic is only the middle of the card and logo on pic with text and info on top and bottom?

BTW even though you took this pic I assume you still have the rights to it to use it on this card, and you didn't give the rights to the couple with the prints?

Agreed. How about this? I shaded the bottom portion to try and make the text more bold.

Perfect. :D

I was just working on the correct name spelling - my wife took pleasure in pointing that out.

IMO the full name is important on his personal business card. If he were to use this for copy in a print ad then I would leave it off. It can go either way.

I think a silver ink for the text would look pretty cool also.

Here's one with the right name.

i Think THIS version looks better.

Did you do some drop shading on th letters? maybe a light gradient matching that brown at the bottom(it looks like you did this but i cant tell if its the ground or gradietn)

No, I think it's just the way the font looks. That's a long address to run across a vertical format but this photo he did screams cool, and I don't think it would work well in a horizontal format. The phone number has a black outline which might look better in a brown.

I personally don't like that picture both in terms of composition and contrast. It looks like it was taken with a point and shoot as the subject is over expose a little. Something like this is more classy. Take into account I made this at 6 am in about 7 minutes, the real one would have more info on it.
