I've been using Avast for some time, now and it's been great. I do also run Malwarebytes, HiJackThis, AVG Anti-root kit and Spyware blaster, as well during periodic cleanups. In all honesty AV's are basically worthless. A good hacker will encrypt a virus such that it installs undetected (even with the best AV scanners on the market). There OS is confusing as fuck, replacement parts cost a fortune ( often times it's cheaper buying a new comp.), and they won't support all my godamn codecs. The only upside is the Virus issue. Personally I'd LOVE to see Mac's attacked more-often (they can be exploited too) - however it's going to be a few years before consumers realize the potential problems with Windows and switch over. PCs get dirty easily and virus scanners don't clean that shit up. CCleaner also helps to clean up .dll's that are not attached to anything as well as odds and end shit. I am currently "cleaning" my aunts pc and with 4 differnt malware cleaners and 2 virus scanners I FINALLY got it clean. Runs like a champ now. I run BlueCoat K9 Web Protection with only the Malware protection enabled. I'm reasonably careful online anyway, but it's nice to have some measure of protection without the bloat of an AV. Sure, it's bit of a risk, but I have been doing this for about a year now on both of my home PCs. no issues thus far and I do regular backups so I'm not really worried. By the way dont try dicks.com when searching for dicks sporting goods. I run Microsoft security essentials. After seeing this thread I downloaded that ccleaner and malwarebytes and ran them both. Didnt find anything with either. The computer used to be decently fast but over the last year and a half it just runs slow and tends to freeze up while loading pages. Eventually if I walk away it will catch back up but I dont know why it does it now with a faster internet connection than it did before. Could it just be getting to old?
