mrs.cos
Give this a shot here. Any Gardeners here? Im learning about permaculture (i dont think i could lose the whole yard, but the idea intrigues me) I want to do rain barrels this year as well. We are getting close to the 8-10 week mark for seedlings. I prepped the beds last week while it was warm. I have a pretty good idea what i am planting, and adding to the mix. Cucumbers, Cherry Tomatos, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Tomatillos. Full sun 90% of the day.. (Fence blocks the sun in the early part of the day) http://www.thehaltermans.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/yard1_2011.jpg This box will be multi purpose. Carrots, Cauliflower, broccoli, other greens (peas?) and as the season progresses, squash and pumpkins might make their way in here, not sure yet though. http://www.thehaltermans.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/yard3_2011.jpg This bed- Peppers, lots of Peppers this season and maybe a few others things http://www.thehaltermans.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/yard4_2011.jpg Side yard- Full Sun, all day. I plan to revamp some of this. The curvy front part of the house, i plan to straighten out, and possibly removing the crab apple to allow more sun to the front. Side yard getting more sunflowers by the upper level of the house. Shallots, garlic and chives are currently planted under the bay window. Herbs are being places all around here as well. http://www.thehaltermans.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/yard2_2011.jpg

mrs.cos
Seeds for Broccoli should be started this week or next. They dont do well in the heat of the summer. You can grow them indoors under a 40w lamp. Seeds need, ideally, 14-18hours of light a day. This is the schedule i am slightly abiding by. Our Ohio had a good article today about seeds. http://ourohio.org/index.php?page=sowing-seeds-indoors Mid to late February: - Put together cold frame and place it onto an area of the garden where warm weather crops will be grown. This will allow time for all seedlings to fully mature in the cold frame before removal. Last week in February or first week in March: - Start seeds of lettuce indoors. Exact date will vary depending on the weather. - When weather permits, empty both compost bins and place about a 1 to 2 inch layer of compost over all garden beds. First or second week of March: - Start seeds of celery, cabbage, broccoli, and brussel sprouts indoors. Third week in March: - Start seeds of peppers, and tomatoes indoors. First week in April: - Onion seedlings/slips arrive via mail and are planted directly out into the garden. - Transplant lettuce seedlings out into the garden under hoop house if the seedlings are big enough. They are usually big enough when they just start to get their second set of true leaves. Second week in April: - Continue to transplant lettuce seedlings out into the garden under the hoop when they get big enough. - Plant pea seeds directly out into the garden Third week in April: - Transplant broccoli, cabbage, and brussel sprout seedlings out into the garden. - Start seeds of cucumbers in cold frame. - Plant certified seed potatoes out into the garden. Fourth week in April: - Transplant tomato and pepper seedlings into bigger pots. - Start more heat tolerant lettuce seeds indoors like butter head and romaine varieties. First Week in May: - Start harvesting a few of the small leaves on your early planted lettuce. - Start harvesting green onions, if large enough. Harvest about half of the topsetting onions for green onions before the plants get too big. - Start a few more heat tolerant lettuce seed varieties outside on the covered back porch. - Transplant celery seedlings out into the garden - Plant corn seeds directly out into the garden. Second week in May: - Take apart cold frame and put away until next spring. - Transplant pepper, tomato, and cucumber seedlings out into the garden. - Plant seeds of bush green beans and pole lima beans directly out into the garden. I buy small plants in the spring and plant them. Did a ton of cherry tomatoes last year, great snack. The house behind me is a foreclosure, I will be rototilling it up and going extreme on the garden this summer.

wnaplay1647545503
Might try the "tomato factory" stuff this year. If it lives up to its claims, it will produce a ton of tomatos. And will probably do the cherry tomatos as well.

I seen a infomercial that claims there plants can grow 16 ft vertically and produce a huge amount per week from one plant. Might try that just for kicks. I had 36 plants of 3 different varietys (this isnt showing my one cherry tomato plant)Celbrity, Big Boy, and Plum(san marzano) 36 plants sounds like a lot, but ultimatnly we used everything, for salsas, sandwhiches, Nathan ate some just like apples, I made sauce and froze it for winter use, (which is all but gone now ) all the plants at Straders was like 14 bucks (i bought a flat) My plants sit in full sun all day too. Gergwheel1647545492
what kind of light bulbs do you use in order to grow inside? I have some bonsai trees that need more light

We have a fraction of the space and plants that you do, and it's till well worth it. Carri got excited a few weeks ago and already started our seedlings inside. Has anyone gotten bell peppers to grow? We suck at those. Will probably do 3ish tomato, a few broccoli, spinach, snap pees, cucumber. Our garden space, doesn't get a ton of sun, but it's what we have to work with! The plastic pots are cheap makeshift composters. This is right after we built up the beds, with those landscaping 'rocks' you see and some top soil. http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/26785_374713309439_507539439_3637405_1532690_n.jpg http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/26785_374713299439_507539439_3637403_900528_n.jpg
