This crash was at the Elvington 1-Mile race May 10th....

 

What happens when a tire explodes doing top speed runs...

 

Avon Storm was the tire running 42psi!

Damn. That guy's lucky to be alive. Sadly, this isn't the last accident like this we'll see, since tires aren't made for these speeds.

 

Admittedly, I know very little about motorcycle tire technology.

Seeing that many tires that consumers put on their "sports cars" are rated at 186+ today, are you saying that bike tires are still limited to 130/ 140mph nowadays ?

More or less I was referring to the guys going over 200 mph. Each time you take a tire over its speed rating it gets weaker. I don't know much about bike tire ratings either, but I can't imagine they are much different.

I'm kidding. Glad he's okay, that was crazy.

 

I was going to say 30+ seconds...slow...lol!

 

Looks like he has the bike to low in the back and it could be rubbing the bottom of the rear fender as the tire grows at speed and hits bumps.

 

Scary accident though.

 

Bike wasn't low at all, plenty of room. Tire just couldn't hanlde it...

I don't think technically any of them are rated for over 186mph but there are plenty of people going 250+ on them. After Continentals 220+ car tires that have been released, now they are running an add for Bill and his 278mph runs...

Hopefully that will get more testing, support and higher ratings for the motorcycle class guys...

Another question, why would you run that high of a tire pressure. Considering that heat causes pressures to rise. Over inflation? AND Speed????

My guess would be that it's because a stiffer tire will be more stable at high speed. Remember that a tire doesn't just deform when it touches the ground. Rubber is a spring, and on the back edge of the tire (where is separates from the road surface) a wave forms. That wave can travel all the way around the tire. Stiffer tire = stiffer spring = wave/oscillation is damped out quicker.

 

Busa? - it's good to see one company supporting high speed amature racing. Hopefully Continental's advertising leads to more support from other manufacturers, or some more sizes of Conti's VMax tire becoming available.

Actually that isn't high pressure at all but pretty standard. It's better to have a little more air than under inflation. Low pressure creates more heat and is more likely to fail at high speeds. Plus less rolling resistance, etc..etc...heck, I've seen guys run 50+...

 

This is why I still have not put my Hookup in the bike. Saw one pop at Norwalk, been sketched out since...

 

For a dragstrip where you accel for a short time and slow down it may be fine. However, on the street/track where you are doing high speeds for a longer period of time, I would stay away from them. Not to mention some of the Shinko's are only W rated (168mph)...
