black00ws6
having debate with another CR member... So I told him, while vacationing, you are ON Maui IN Hawaii. ON a specific island, IN the region. Maui being the specific island, Hawaii being the region or group of islands. thoughts?

LJ
Well, the Island of Maui is part of Maui county. So you could say that you are in Maui, on Maui, in Hawaii
smokin5s
IN Maui... say what you want... regardless people don't say I'm on Maui.... you can be on a bus or in a bus, but you aren't ON Maui funny you felt the need to post on CR to try to get other's approval. greg1647545532
I would say "IN" is acceptable in nearly all circumstances involving vacations to islands. I'm going to be in Australia, or in Ireland, or in Cypress, or in Maui. "ON" seems to work if you're talking about a geographic feature - on Mt. Washington, on the Thames, on a deserted island. However, as soon as you start talking in terms of political boundaries, I feel like you should switch to in -- In the Azores, in Bermuda, in Hawaii, in Haiti, etc. So it depends on if you're talking about Maui as a political entity, or Maui as a geographic feature. smokin5s
He was talking about a VS model moved to Maui so he said "she's on Maui" and my point was I didn't understand wtf he was talking about, and then asked, do you mean, she is in Maui like taking a vacation... that's when the usual Lovin's trash talking started... and here we are. greg1647545532
"She's in Maui" seems more natural to me. Like, she's over there, in Maui, as opposed to, she's over there, on that island in the Pacific known to the natives as Maui.
black00ws6
funny you felt the need to post on CR to try to get other's approval. na, just for more ownage and to show CR how dumb you really are. CRed05
If it's an island and the name of a city/town/county then both would be correct. On one and in the others.
Flyin Miata
On is generally used if you're talking about being on a surface, including an island. In is used for enclosed places, including town names or locations. So both could be correct if you aren't specifying how you are describing Maui. At would just sound fucking stupid in this case though.
