I often see debates on what is a good pistol round for bear - usually people say nothing less than .44 Mag - these guys probably had .40's. Yet they did the job. Maybe they used they shotguns too... Close range, animals just wandering around. You can get penetration with an ol 1911. If you can put it in the right place it will be as easy as anything else. They were likely sitting ducks.
