jeffro
steel wool. I feel like regardless of what you do, unless you paint it, the rust is going to return. steel wool it, then rub oil into it.

CRed05
Never personally used it (German car ), but I've heard good things about the brand.

KillJoy
A Brass Wire Wheel should work. But, like others have said, it left uncoated, the rust will return.
twistedfocus1647545489
Never personally used it (German car ), but I've heard good things about the brand. I have, since I exclusively drive rusted junk. Works really well but you absolutely have to follow the prep instructions. It's pretty thick though and would likely cover your timing marks. You could always throw a timing tape on there after you refinish it.
Green Bastard
Try a scotch brite pad to clean it up then just repaint it if you can find a paint that will lay a bit thinner than something that's just gonna cover it up, that or just clean it off with a wire wheel and hit it with clear for protection

schmuckingham
Wont use stock one why do you people insist on thinking I wont coat it try the chemical rust stuff
gbracing81
You can use steel wool or a scotch bright pad. Then after it is clean you can use a white crayon (or similar marking tool) to rub over the timing marks and numbers. Then wipe off the excess. You will be left with clearly visable numbers and timing marks. Even when the rust comes back you will still be able to see your timing marks. This is how I mark the balancer on my Chevy.
