Clearly it's a thrown together, pieced together hot rod. They look ratty thus rat rod. Makes sense to me.

Check out Car Kulture DeLuxe magazine if you want a little inspiration. The West Coast is chalked full of the rockabilly/rat rod scene. Not sure if you wanted to go car or truck, but the market is huge. If you want to stay traditional, think Flathead, white walls, and spending some time at swap meets. A clean 3 window coupe or an F100 would be on my top 5 list of rat rod worthy beginnings.

Just another idea, but a Gasser project would be pretty sweet too.

YES YES YES! Gassers are cool as hell and lots of events where you can race them.

Here are some things to think about...

post some pics of what you want your end result to look like Erik, I have been wanting to build an old truck for some time, just don't have the money for what i want to do. I want a old Chevy with a newer cummins in it, lowered (a little, not on the ground), chopped top and no white walls.

i don't think he had more than $4000 in the whole thing. the only thing he didnt do was the body and frame. he put an old straight six in it.
