AR-7 Review

Recommended Posts

I picked up the Henry Survival Rifle AR-7 new for $240. Everything including 2 magazines fit inside the stock. It is lightweight and weighs about 2.5 lbs. It fits snug inside my Maxpedition Larkspur messenger bag that I am using as a BOB. I fired it today for the first time. I decided to not use the CCI mini-mag 40gr rounds that were recommended. Instead I used Federal 36gr copper hollow points. I shot around 200 rounds with no failure to feed. The trigger pull on this gun is heavy. Google says it is 7 pounds and that sounds about right. It isn't difficult but it could be much smoother. Not much I can say though for a rifle that fits into a bag. Another thing I do not like is there is no place to put a sling on it. The manufacture says it is waterproof and I see an O-Ring inside the butt stock. It is supposed float in water but I haven't tested that yet. But if it does float it would be nice to have at least a mount for a carbine clip attached to your body. The sight is just a basic peephole design with a bright orange front sight. Since I am right handed and left eye dominate it doesn't feel comfortable. It works but I rather have a scope. Other then those issues I am very happy with the purchase. This is a great plinking gun.

I have always had one of these. Bought the first one in 76. I took one apart for cleaning and got to looking. I took one of the pieces out that allowed it to shoot fully automaticly. Problem was after releasing the trigger it continues to fire. :gabe:

Neat rifle, but it seems like more of a novelty. The caliber is just too small for survival purposes ie: hunting. Maybe hunt squirrel, but it would be useless against any bigger game.

Cheaper than Dirt had them for $197 yesterday. Was looking at them. Interesting, but I can't seem to justify pulling the trigger on one.

I have a 10/22 that cost me $300 with scope from a member here, i got a great deal but i only tend to plink with it. Ive been thinking about selling it (for the same price) and picking up one of these b/c it would fit in my BOB alot easier giving some versatility. I like them but just have yet to pick one up yet.

That's a pretty cool little package. That front site should be hooded, hopefully the orange (plastic?) is sturdy.

Don't take out your sear (or any FCG parts) to make something automatic. I've had out-of-batteries with a .22lr and it isn't a big deal, except it's loud and you usually get a lodged bullet in the bore.
