mrs.cos
Two weeks ago we replaced my dead struts with new KYBs. I had an alignment done and left for a road trip. Yesterday, while we are driving to dayton, Nathan notices my car is driving weird and unsafe, so we turn around and head home. I DID NOT NOTICE THIS while iw as on my trip, i typically had 4 people in my car most of the time, and the roads arent exactly the greatest in NYC/Queens and was mostly city driving, stop and go traffic. When we got home and Nathan inspected the tires, my passenger rear has excessive tire wear on the inside of the tire and today he go under the car and finds the strut blown. Im not sure how to handle this situation. I know i want to contact KYB and get the strut replaced, but what about the tire wear? how do we know if the tires need replaced? Do i talked to KYB about that as well? These tires are no where near being needed to be replaced, but with such wear on the inside of one tire, i am worried about the differential problems that could arise from this failure and wear on one tire, because with subarus/awd you cant just replace 1 or 2 tires, you have to replace all four.. I dont konw the mechanics of it.. just know what i have been told. I want to rip my hair out im so angry about all of this right now. oh8sti
i wouldn't worry about the tire honestly. It doesn't look like enough wear to matter. What you've been told is by absolute purists (maybe you are one) and if you are then by all means pursue trying to get someone to pay for it, but i think you'll end up not getting anything resolved on the tires. Maybe I'm wrong though. Ive have Wrx's and STi's and i can say based on the pictures, i wouldn't worry about that minimal of wear on any of mine. copperhead
once the strut is replaced and the alignment corrected you won't have any issues, I wouldn't replace it. Tread still looks fine. I would just get the tire rebalanced and call it a day.
Chadz89GTA
That's a bad tire? Id hate to see what you consider a good tire -_-
Rocky31186
Have them warranty out the strut and do another alignment. I've installed faulty kyb shocks before. Also, with 4 people riding in your car, with possibly stuff in the trunk, will cause excessive tire wear. As when we do alignments there is no weight in the car. Add in 600* +\- and the rear tires will camber in.
Dave1647545494
I must be the only one who sees the steel sticking out of the tire in the middle picture... it looks like a broken belt in the tire near the sidewall have it inspected at a tire shop. POS VETT
There is a minimal difference between the left and the right rear tires. A blown damper does not exactly cause a tire to wear prematurely in one area; alignment does. A blown damper will create "cupping" or "feathering" pattern. Claim and replace the blown damper, check alignment, and swap the left and the right tires if that will make you feel better. No need to be angry. PS: I presume you are a car person, why KYB ? Why not Koni/Bilstein/such ?
mrs.cos
Kyb is OEM For Subaru and since I drive an outback and it's mainly for daily driving, nothing fancy, we stick with OEM. As far as steel sticking out, I went out and didnt see any coming out bu the tire is definitely flatter on one the inside than It is on the other tire. Kyb will only refund the strut, no labor or return shipping or anything. Tire rack gave us $100 gift card for our troubles.
