Going back to school?

Well, I've just turn 35 years old this year. Father of a three years old and a five months old boys.

I dropped out of college after my first year. Since then I've been working and earned my own business. But the thought of going back to school keep popping back in my mind. Going back to school will not help my business but rather than a personal thing. My main reason of wanting to go back to school is so my children will have to finish school. I don't want one day that they'll tell me that I can't tell them to finish schooling because I myself did not. Does that make any sense? Or am I wasting my time? And since it'll not be use, what degree would be the easiest to achieve?

Thank for reading, it's late. I need to go to sleep.

Your reason for going back to school is yours and yours alone. If you feel it is the right thing to do, do it. Beyond that, school is not a waste of time. Just getting the knowledge of a specific subject (i.e., the early Roman Empire) probably won't help your business, but the other skills learned certainly could.

Don't look at something based on how others view its difficulty, you could end up with a major which you absolutely despise. Look through the majors and see if anything jumps out at you. That being said, Criminology and Communications tend to be considered the easier degrees.

I'd recommend Business Management or Economics as either could possibly help your business, and you probably already have a good grasp so that will make them easier. Business is pretty easy. Economics takes some mathematical sense but it's not too difficult.

It's more about you than anything else. I am "back" in school myself after swearing I would never go back. This summer I will finish all the course work for my masters degree. I'm looking forward to finishing my license so that I can start taking courses that I want to (I'm thinking about a Cisco certification maybe). Maybe instead of a degree, cruise through the course catalog and see what courses would benefit you as a businessman, or would benefit you as a father/husband/family man. Since you don't really "need" the actual degree, why limit yourself to just that little slice of knowledge when you can pick and choose the things that interest or are important to you?

BTW, I can tell you from my experience, going back to school is a whole different ball game than it was back when I was a kid. Obviously the education is the same, but I have changed. My goal is to get to my masters, and then 30 semester hours on top of that. I have to take college coursework to continue renewing my license anyhow, at least now I'm getting past the required work and I can start digging into work I want to do.
