Fuel for the Political Fire: Detroit is a worthless $#!+hole

With the recent craze of zombie media stuff, Detroit should market itself as being an ideal location for shooting post-apocalyptic zombie films, shows, etc. And I am not kidding - all those high rise apartment buildings with no windows and graffiti and weeds growing everywhere look like they are straight out of a zombie movie. It's so haunting and desolate it's surreal.

Here's a plan to do just that.

How do these fucking worthless pieces of shit get elected!?

I agree. Obama should never have be re-elected. However ffd to :28 and the people of Detroit and others like them put him back there. Dumb. Getting what they deserve.

The entire city needs to be fire bombed.

Detroit. Cheaper than dirt.

Detroit. No need for fertilizer, it's already a pile of shit.

There are honestly investors trying to turn parts of the D back to farm land, but no one seems to be thinking about how contaminated much of that land is after decades of industrialization.

2)Feed to people on welfare in Detroit

3)Start Zombie apocolypse

4)Film Zombie apocolypse documentary

Put that in your business plan and you would probably get funding.

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5898829-The-Detroit-Packard-Plant-Then-and-Now

some pretty interesting pictures from the old Packard plant along with opinions about the city in general.

The Packard plant is a disgusting symbol of what the city of Detroit has become. They are JUST NOW moving to foreclose on the property after hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes. They tried to before, but didn't do their paperwork right. For the longest time they didn't even know who the rightful owner was, until it was discovered that a famous graffitti artists did a wall in the plant. Preservationists were looking to remove the wall to preserve the artists work, and then the owner magically surfaced.

Some of the best ruin porn is the Detroit Train Station. The main room was designed by the same guy who did Grand Central Station. It was once a beautiful building, now left to rot. The Packard Plant is a collection of square brick buildings that are crumbling (and have tress growing in the roof) and needs to be demolished. The train station is something that should be (or should have been) preserved. Yet the Detroit City Councel has put more effort into forcing the destruction of the train station because it's become a symbol of the city's blight.

I immersed myself in Detroit wikipedia last night. It's kind of sad to see how much potential Detroit had - and how much of a thriving city it was - and to compare that with how things there are now. It was once referred to as "Paris of the West" because of it's architecture. At one point not long ago, Detroit was the fourth or fifth largest city in the United States. In the past decade, it's lost 25% of it's population - that's crazy to me. Imagine if 1 out of every 4 people you knew just moved away.

Next time you are in town you should drive around some of the neighbourhoods near Wayne State. There were some very rich neighborhoods for back in the day when auto exec's lived down there full of brick Victorian mansions. Some are taken care of, some are crumbling. There's still a lot of interesting architecture down there, it's just in a sad state.

This is crazy, but I know exactly what you're talking about. We drove through the Wayne State campus area when leaving the Lions' game. And, because traffic was a fucking nightmare, we spent a lot of time staring at the surroundings. And, just like you said, there were a bunch of really big, Victorian-style homes. It was weird, as one would look immaculate, and it was 20 yards from one that looked like a run-down crackhouse, but then there'd be another one that looked immaculate, and so forth.

I was in Detroit this past weekend. I attended the Lions-Colts game. Great game, BTW.

The area immediately around Ford Field - which includes Comerica (the Tigers' ballpark) - seemed nice. Clean, cool stuff, etc. The rest of it looked like a war zone. Just lots and lots and lots of abandoned buildings, abandoned lots, etc.

They have filmed a few recent movies in Detroit, but PA and OH have recently become more "business friendly" to Hollywood. The Avengers was partially filmed in Cleveland, and the sequel will feature more Cleveland. Batman series went from Chi-town to Pittsburgh.

Also, re: population loss, if you're an engineer, it pays BIGTIME to get a job in Detroit. Salaries average something like 25% better just for working in Detroit.

Batman and Iron Man 3 were going to be filmed in Detroit, then the new governor got rid of all the film incentives and they immediately pulled out. The new "Oz" was filmed in a newly constructed film studio in Pontiac, then the film incentives ended and they couldn't book any more business. It's actually pretty sad, the former governor (Granholm aka the most annoying bitch in the world) fucked up big time and guaranteed the $18 million in loans with state pension funds. Now there's a brand new building that's going to sit empty and rot starting on its completion date. It's almost right next door to my office, which is surrounded by empty buildings once part of a thriving industrial park.

I LOL'd at this. I would like to see where that figure came from because it's not ture. Unless, you're saying that if you choose to live in a shitty Detroit neighborhood you're money will go 25% farther. There are a lot of engineering jobs in the Detroit area, and everyone is hiring, but htere are very few qualified candidates. If you are the right person, and you find the right job at the right time this could be true, but it's not a valid statement across the board.

I should specify I read this in an article about jobs for recent grads. Basically it was the difference of a job that'd pay $40k in a city like columbus would pay $50k in detroit.

That I can believe 100%, and those numbers are ~7 years old, but probably haven't changed too much. I know of a few new grads making over $60k, and some are stuck-up, worthless, self-righteous, good-for-nothing bitches.

I need to start another thread about the complete worthless talent coming out of college these days. I've seen some real peices of work lately. If I could find someone that was able to find their own way in/out of the parking lot I would hire them for $60k right now. (I'll even give them a NAV system, if necessary)

What're you hiring for :gabe: FIAT owns 58.5% of 1/3 of the Big Three now.

Surprisingly relevant to this thread.

I'm an engineering supervisor. I have 2 openings in my group for Systems/Test Engineers that I have been trying to fill for months. There's alos two more supervisor positions that are open in my group and I sit in on those interviews. The candidates out there right now are worthless. The night before I made that post, I stayed at work late to interview a guy that wrote a good resume, then bombed every aspect of the interview. When I sat down and said, "tell me a little bit about yourself" he replied, "well, in college I wasn't really a good student at all."

FIAT may own a majority of Chrysler now, but there is still allot of engineering and development that occurs here, and that's not going to change.

Marchionne is a great CEO, he's doing everything he can to merge FIAT and Chrysler as efficiently as possible in the current economic climates in both Detroit and Italy, and it seems the unions on both sides of the pond are doing whatever they can to stand in the way of it.

I'm not a kneejerk anti-union guy (lots of teachers in my extended family) but it's really annoying because I think there is a lot of good innovation potential for all automakers at this moment, but labor issues are tanking everything.

I feel for you, my undergrad International Relations degree might as well say "Graduated daycare from ages 18-21 with a concentration in playing with globes". Really all I learned in college was time management and how to not act like an unprofessional douchebag. But that's pretty much all Int'l Relations is. I don't think high school AP credits in calculus and physics qualify me for the type of work you're looking for.

EDIT: I meant to expand on my first thought. I think Marchionne is really committed to using the engineering potential of the U.S. labor market, but I think it's going to take a miracle for Detroit to make it a reality. In everything I've seen from him, he seems to want to bail on Italy for American shores completely.

While I would like to hire you for an engineering job and pay you less because of your degree, HR won't let me. You'd be qualified for our test group though, since they are all considered technician's.

Not to go too far off topic, but we've been through a lot of guys in our test group because the applicants without degree's are even worse then the applicants with degree's (duh). Last year in Vegas one of these guys had the job of following me on a predetermined route. First, he missed an exit (he was following me!!) so I told him to turn around and catch up with us at the next stop. About 45 minutes later he's calling me saying he's lost and asking me for directions by describing the names to the streets he's passing. His car had a f-ing NAV system. He called me three more times, but I stopped answering. People who aren't total retards are hard to find.

I completely agree.
