2pointslow
So im looking at cameras for the woman as its what she wants for her wedding present. She has said she wants the d5100 however for her first Dslr im not sure she needs or can use all of its functions just yet. She will most likely be taking random pictures of everything for the first month and then forget she has it. Can anyone specify what the actual differences between the two and how it will effect the pictures?

Rocky31186
Even at a beginner, she can learn the camera. I have a d3000 which was a great learning device. Maybe get her some lessons at cord camera or something?
TTQ B4U
Rocky and Trish addressed the Nikon thing......bodies will come and go so head their insight as Nikonians. I will stress good glass. It's not cheap and perhaps you won't buy it right away, but remember, that's more important than the body.
mrs.cos
Glass is definitely important, but for a consumer, who is learning, body will be important first... IMHO. Glass is an investment, and most consumers are looking for the long term investment when they start out. They will want certain things in the body. and i think figuring out those things first is good. Most nikon lenses even the consumer are pretty darn good. Low light is important to think about when decided which camera though. Is she going to want to take it to restaurants? Any particular reason for Nikon over Canon? Are you open to looking at Canon equivalents? Don't be afraid to check out both brands and see the pros and cons..
M0nk3y
Either would be good for a beginner. The 5100 has better ISO range, and I'm pretty sure they use the same crop sensor (I could be wrong on this though). My shots with a D3100. I'd still say I'm a beginner:
