The_buster
So the maxima is supposed to have high test fuel in it, 93+. That's expensive, I'm only getting 20-26hrs a week. Ive been putting low grade and sometimes mid grade in it. I was wondering if putting octane boosters in it would hurt it. We have a few different levels at work. Also would too low of an octane make it sputter when wot?
thorne
It should run on both, I know the VQ35 can run on both but makes less power. If your really worried about paying 20cents more a gallon I don't think you should be looking a body kits and what not. If you do the math on the cost of GOOD octane boost vs buying hioctane is really a wash.
thorne
http://www.manualowl.com/am/Nissan/1996-Maxima/Manual/826?page=174 Per the manual you only need 87 octane and even 85.... If you don't beat on the car you will be fine

You'd be lucky to really boost your octane more then a point or two with most "boosters" on the market, just buy 89, most cars tuned for "premium" gas are designed to run on 91 because that is all thats available in many parts of the country. Honestly I didn't think Maximas fell into that.
The_buster
The fuel door says 93 octane... but with less than 30hrs a week its not always an option. And I never said I was buying a bodykit right away.. I said I was looking at what there was for the maxima.
The_buster
Thanks for the info thorne. The owners manual says 93 as well so I was curious.
DTM Brian
WHY 93 OCTANE FOR MAXIMA? BECAUSE MUTHAFUCKIN RACECAR!!!!

Mitch
here goes. 96 maxima has an 18.5 gallon fuel tank. 20 cents difference between low and high test. IF the tank was completely dry, that is a $3.70 difference buying the recommended grade octane and the lower octane. Auto zones website lists octane boosters from $4.29 to 13 bucks. I did the math, you decide. It's much easier to just put in the right gas.

imstock2
If you want a better running car and increased mileage try sea Foam. It pretty much cleans all the carbon out of your valve train. I sea foamed my c6 every 2k miles and it would smoke like a freight train until it was all burnt out. Stuff works amazing and keeps your engine clean. Clean engine=happy engine= improved mileage/ last longer. Regardless what octane pump gas 87-93 your going to get massive carbon build up. Take my advice. Sea foam your car and it'll be the best 10$ you spent on it! Just apply 1/5 in crankcase, 1/3 in brake booster line, rest in your fuel tank. It'll do it all
The_buster
they gave us the stp version of sea foam for free at work. couldn't tell much of a difference.
Mensan
Octane boost raises 2-3 points...i.e., from 87 to 87.3. Not worth $4.50 is it? Read this Needs more Mt. Dew. Infraction LOL

DKilbourne
Sugar works well as an octane booster.......that being said, just put 91 or 93 in it. It will be cheaper as stated before.
