There were issues with the water cooled switch over mainly with porus cylinder walls failing and the like...but those issues have long since surfaced at this point.

 

IMS bearing is a weak point and needs to be addressed as preventative maintenance just like anyone plans for timing belt changes. Air Oil separator can go bad and if you ever have the opportunity it should be switched out as well to prevent failure (car smokes out the exhaust like it's blowing up). RMS's tend to leak.

 

There were soo many cars produced in the 996 series that there's a huge number of them on the market making them extremely cheap. $10k can actually buy a pretty nice example of a 2.5 Boxster.

 

With spec boxster racing there are great, relatively inexpensive and proven setups for the cars to be great fun at the track for not a ton of money in upgrades.
