mrs.cos
So we were wanting to get some windows installed where there are no windows now. We were told that we would have to rewire most of the house and hardwire smoke detectors in every room of the house. My house is not a big house- this seems super excessive. Does anyone know anything about the electrical codes that were updated at the first of the year.
Trouble Maker
Interested in this info, our house is old and we are looking to update things overtime. ... and hardwire smoke detectors in every room of the house. That does seem strange. This would mean 7 detectors in our 1140sqft house, that's not excessive, it's just downright ridiculous. mrs.cos
It means 10 in my 1400 sqft house and at 150 an install its even more rediculous. He said if we had done this in December we wouldn't have had to do this.
Trouble Maker
While I don't know your local code, or NEC, I do know that if you update certain things it means you have to update others. For example, if you redo a part of your house like the bathroom or kitchen, you (may) have to update all electric to code. We visited one house where they had a huge new fuse box and 200Amp service. The house only had maybe a dozen to 20 outlets and less than a dozen light fixtures in something like a 1600-1400sqft house. Think old house that has 1 or 2 fixtures in every room. The bathroom had been redone at some point and our realtor told us about this rule and speculated they had to update the panel and service to meet current electrical code due to the bathroom update. Windows triggering electrical and detectors seem strange but not improbable with how weird codes can be sometimes. Did they (contractor) tell you a logical reason why windows were triggering anything have to do with the electrical code?
mrs.cos
He said because its part of the frame , they will have to move electrical to install the windows. I was prepared for some updates. I was not prepared for this much work.
Snowflake
Unless things have changed you only need them in bedrooms, within 15-20ft outside of bedrooms which usually means one in the hall and one on every floor. Im pretty sure you do not need them in every room. Who told you this anyway?
SloSVTruck
Smokes need to be in every bedroom, normally 1 in the hallway, 1 in the living room, 1 in the basement if unfinished...... And yes if you pull any permits to do reframing and end up having to move electrical then it is possible you may fall victim to upgrading certain things..... most of the time its just the hardwired smokes. What county are u in? Columbus and licking can be major pains with electrical inspectors. If your having a contractor do this depending on how strict they are..... and if you have a good electrician to move the electrical you can probably get by without having to pull an electrical permit. mrs.cos
I'm in columbus- I talked to rosatti because they are right around the corner. We have them on all levels. He said they dont like to do new windows now because of the new code.

mrs.cos
Do it yourself. Remember that talk we had about starters and finishers? Keep in mind my tile floor is still not done.
