I need help better maintaining my firearms

I have a big problem with surface rust on a lot of my guns during storage. I have a dehumidifier in my safe but it is small and one of those rechargeable deals. I am going to get a plug in one. I still would like to do more to prevent rust.

 

What methods and products can someone recommend to jot only prevent but get rid of rust after it shows?

I use silica for my camera gear, I get pretty big bags of it at work. For my guns I keep them probably way to clean and oiled.

If storing for a long time, coat them in Eezox. Get a Golden rod and some silica beads.

 

Try Kano Kroil for the rust.

I use those gun socks that cover everything. I am also storing in a safe with a plug in golden rod. Try to clean/oil the guns in storage even if you are not using them. And always clean after you use it.

First, you MUST clean your firearms after you use them. Powder residue can trap moisture from the air and hold it.

 

Second, keep all metal surfaces oiled. There are many products to choose from but most will work. Oil the surfaces periodically, especially if you are storing in a location where the humidity is over 50%. Oil is the key. If you are going for long term storage, RIG grease is a good product to use.

 

The "dehumidifier" like the Eva-Dry is really just a fancy container for desiccant. It helps but a Golden Rod heater inside your safe or cabinet will do a better job. I use both together. The Golden Rod heaters keep the temperature of the air inside the cabinet or safe slightly higher than the outside air so that moisture won't condense on your firearms.

 

To remove light surface rust, some oil in BRONZE wool will do a good job. Rub very lightly. Don't use steel wool unless you don't care about the gun's finish.
