My FD RX7 PROJECT, WINTER 2013-2014

Finally had time last winter to do some stuff to mines :). Basically, well mostly, change lots of stuff in engine bay, and some interior stuff too. Nothing done out of necessity, mainly for a new look, keep it fresh and upgrade some stuff. More I got into it, more I was glad I did. I have spent last few years on other peoples FD's, mines needed some attention.

Before pics. Disassembly.

Main engine harness. When I modified it approx. 5 years ago I decided to use multiple colors of tape, and spiral loom....seemed like a cool idea at the time :fuuuu:. Shows way to much dirt, and after the fact looks like my brothers kids did it....oh well. Just the basics now, black 3M SUPER 88 tape. Only used nylon loom where I thought it was needed.

These are just initial pics of harness at the start. More will come up later.

LIM PICS: Before & Mods

I changed from OEM FD upper and lower intake manifolds to Japanese COSMO ones for this project. Much different looking, thus...part of the new look picture. However, they are also bigger, much larger diameter runners mainly. As a result they are not a direct bolt on. Some modifications required. Cool, cause thats just my style. An w/all the work needed to make it fit, and eliminating all the vacum line nipples in place of welded in bungs, and cleaning, and cleaning.....

I,,, decided to cut all the excess material off too :megusta: I hate cover plates. They were not going to go w/the new picture at all. Dont take much to ruin a engine bay picture either I tell you what. Started w/a 4.5in cutting wheel. Works, but way to slow for this deal. I quickly switched up to my carbide cutters, which I use for porting these engines. Let the aluminum fly!

Before pic here:

The COSMO intakes I obtained had black powder coat on em. Fun to get off too... Why coat aluminum, defeats whole purpose in my opinion. Everybody like something different......

Dude, that's wild that you removed that much aluminum casting over the runners, Kevin! Any worries that you might compromise strength of the manifold? Make it susceptible to cracking?

Naturally I did consider strength. I don't feel it compromised it at all to be honest. It has been on there all summer w/no problems. It was actually a crap load of work to do that. I really like it though. Def different.

There is a huge difference there in the runners between those manifolds. It looks great.

Without a doubt. Huge difference in both size of actual runners and the surge tank difference on the UIM's. To give a quick comparison, the distance from the outer most bolt holes (furthest foward and furthest backward) on the LIM flange, where it mates up to UIM flange, the COSMO manifolds are just shy of being 2in. wider !

Interesting setup with the v-mount with fans. Are you going to run an under panel at all?

I can't remember which turbo you run, is it a T04?

No under engine cover. I will say this, I like my setup a great deal, and I like it w/no under engine cover, and with no deflectors or ducting. When I shut off the car after driving and raise the hood, you can instantly notice difference. No rush of very noticeable hot air, at all, and you can put you hands right on air pipes, IC, etc...and they are not nearly as hot as used to be. I get a crap load of air thru the vents I put in the inner fender liners too, them pics will come up soon.
