Mac sound issues with netflix

I know a few of you in here use Macs and are knowledgeable so maybe you can help me out with my issue. I've been using this setup to watch netflix since early 2013 with no issues until a few months ago. When I watch netflix the sound cuts out for a second or two and then fixes itself. I hear the sound play through the mac speaker then to goes back to my external speakers. The video is fine it does not stutter. After it is done the audio syncs perfectly with the video. I can't reproduce this in a specific video at a specific time in the video. It just happens randomly but often. Movies and TV shows do it. This only happens on netflix. Youtube, hulu, and playing video files locally on the hard drive have no problems. I tested for hours with no audio problems.

My setup is a mac mini late 2012 with HDMI out to my TV. My TV only has digital Audio Out, so I wired this to my stereo receiver. I mute the TV and only have sound coming out of my large floor speakers. I am running netflix in safari. I was on Mountain Lion for a while. I had no previous reason to update since everything used to work fine. I recently updated to Yosemite, and updated safari to latest version. Now the issue is worse. It literally happens every few minutes now! Chrome does the same thing.

I am buying a new HDMI wire tonight to see if that fixes it. I don't have Optic audio out on the Mac. Apple does make a thunderbolt to Optic dongle but it is almost $200. I am not spending that much money on simple troubleshooting.

Any ideas what to try next?

My first thought was browser, but you mentioned trying both Safari and Chrome. I know Netflix used to use the Silverlight plugin, which is utter crap, and always borked on Safari for me.

Maybe try Firefox, since it's another free troubleshooting step.

I use a sony bluray player to stream netflix. Some movies don't have any sound. Other movies, the sound cuts in and out. Other movies have no problem at all. I've been wondering if my problem is with my bluray player or if it's with netflix. With what you are experiencing, I'm now wondering if it's a nexflix problem.

Your mac DOES have optical out. It is inside of the headphone port. Run an optical out of your mac to the receiver and set it as the default audio output.

You need a cable like this or just a toslink with the adapter.
