Mowgli1647545497
Just got donated a 1966 Corsair convertible. Was told car had thrown rod. Looking for local shop that can do this kind of work but wont take a forever to get it done. Nearest resto place I called had 2 year waiting list. Car needs new roof and some body work but we want to get the mechanicals up first so we only eat a flatbed tow once. Thanks

Rice Eater
Hopefully you tore into a flat SIX or somebody robbed you lol. I had a '63 and a '64 in high school. The are much like working on a VW, pull the engine to do major stuff. Just get all the tins back on. And keep an extra fan belt, they don't last long with that twisting 90 degree turn they make. Geeto67
I used to have a running corvair turbo flat six engine in my garage in ny. My dad threw it away when I moved. I had a 1966 Monza vert and never got around to swapping it in. Point is, corvair engines are cheap. There is a running 66 four door on CL that is at $1k best offer, betcha it would make a hell of a parts car.
BigOxley
that belt configuration makes me confused. why would they do that?

93 RX-7
When you say thrown a rod, do you mean spun a bearing or blew a hole in the block?
Mowgli1647545497
I say possibly thrown a rod because that's what the owner (non car guy) told me, probably third hand to him. He inherited it from relative and was just looking to move it. I have yet to get the rear up so I can get underneath it but from on top it sure doesnt look like it threw a rod for real. Of course on a flat 6 I have no experience with what direction that would go....

Geeto67
I've never heard of a corvair engine spinning a crank bearing. I've seen one with a bad rod bearing once but that's it. Usually the fan belt breaks and they overheat and heat seize. Or someone runs the engine out of oil. The only way to work on a corvair engine is to pull it out of the car. If you are a beefy dude you can probably lift the engine yourself.
zeitgeist57
I'll trade you my non-running BMW convertible for your non-running Corvair convertible...
99StockGT
Should probably give Lucore Automotive in Plain City a call and see if they could help you out, I hear they are pretty useful with that kind of thing 614-873-4470
