Tech Nerds: Need advice on a trade

I am currently trying to sell an Alienware M17x R3 because I have no use for it and need something more portable now that I have a desktop to do gaming. I want to buy or trade for a Surface Pro 3, but I was offered a trade today for a Dell Venue 11 Pro. The guy claimed it had a i5-4300U just like the surface pro 3 and he would throw in the attachable keyboard and stylus as well.

Sounds like a solid trade to me... but... here is the problem. Every single page I look at says that it has an i5-4300"Y" inside it and not the "U" variant. I asked him via email to confirm and he claimed that his tablet had the "U" variant. I did some research and the Venue seems promising. The fact that it has the removable battery and hard drive make it very tempting.

My main question to CR would be, is this guy telling the truth? I can only find a few articles to back up his claim that "maybe" dell produced a version with the "U" variant and it is possible that it exists. Has anyone on CR ever used or seen this tablet in person? I can't find a solid review of it on Youtube that uses the "U" variant i5 version. Should I just wait and see if someone offers cash or a surface pro 3?

he's full of shit

That's kinda what I thought. I knew the Venue came with a "Y" variant, but I don't think Dell ever released a "U" variant in the US. Anyone ever used this tablet (The Venue). I want to know if its worth it to make the trade even with the gimped "Y" i5 or if I should just wait for other offers?

Pretty sure the Y vs. U debate will not effect performance enough for you to ever notice it. just make the trade

Processor Base Frequency 1.6 GHz

Max Turbo Frequency 2.3 GHz

Processor Base Frequency 1.9 GHz

Max Turbo Frequency 2.9 GHz

23% difference at max speed, thats pretty significant

that's about how I feel as well. The Y version was designed for tablets and as a result has reduced performance, while the U version was designed for ultra books and has a little more horsepower. Now I understand that I am not buying a tablet for "performance" but to me the processor matters in this case with a 23% difference in max speed. But Greg has a point... were not talking a significant jump in speed but the GPU under the hood is different on the Y version which would cause reduced performance in media and gaming.

I think I might decline the trade unless this guy can prove he has the U version.
