Dude wouldn't have got caught if he hadn't filmed it - Lesson 1: don't film yourself doing illegal shit. Also his friends ratted him out so Lesson 2: don't involve your friends in your stupid illegal activities.

That being said, if ol' whats his name can get permits to run the hoonicorn around LA, how hard is it really to get a film permit for Orange County?

Look at all the company mentions in the beginning...clearly there were a few people that donated time/people/cameras/MONEY to make this video happen. I'm certain it wouldn't have happened without support from commercial interests.

Someone ratted.

Someone ratted.

it says in the oh so well written Jalopnik article (#sarcasm):

Two people who helped film Blake Willkey’s viral video tearing up the streets of San Diego testified against him and identified him as the driver in the footage, as local

Not that they really needed to. This Blake asshat plastered his name as big as he could on the side of his V8-powered dune buggy.

he plead to:

- violating his parole stemming from a 2014 reckless driving charge

- four counts of reckless driving,

- one count of “illegal exhibition of speed,” (anybody who has been busted for street racing should be familar with this one)

- one count of “failure to get a special event permit,”

If he had the special event permit, he wouldn't have to plead to any of it. Proof that the gubment needs to get paid first. Just in a quick search turns up a special event street closure fee schedule. If he had an NFP 501©(3) he could have paid $75 per street closure, and if it was just a regular business it would have been $100 per street closure. Most SoCal cities run about $100-$150. So really he could have planned this better and raised maybe a couple of grand, closed all the streets he wanted and avoided jail.

Really? Can I get special event permit here in Cbus? Just close down some secluded stretch of road for a Saturday night.

We used to use the block party association in Brooklyn to close down two streets and have a bike show and mini bike races for 7 years straight, I don't see why you couldn't do something similar here. Keep in mind if you are thinking about an impromptu drag race with real street cars the city might have some different requirements but it's nothing money can't fix. Of course your local track is probably cheaper.
