Jackson1647545504
http://www.elevenwarriors.com/columbus/2016/03/68663/online-petition-urges-columbus-to-build-a-macho-man-statue A lot of people forget that Macho Man Randy Savage was born in Columbus, Ohio. Now, one Columbus man wants the city to honor the man got to the second round in 11W's Heart of It All Classic, our attempt to crown history's greatest Ohioan. From rollingstone.com: Earlier this week, a man named Joe Chapman launched a Change.org petition, asking Columbus mayor Andrew Ginther to honor the city's native son – "an incredible athlete, performer and cultural icon" ^– by placing a statue of him in downtown Columbus. "'Macho Man' Randy Savage is known the world over as one of the best professional wrestlers of all time," Chapman writes. "During Savage's 32 year career, he held over 20 championships…and is a WWE Hall of Famer. Randy Savage also wrestled in what most consider the best match of all time, in front of 93,000 fans at 'WrestleMania III.'" Savage was born Randy Mario Poffo in Columbus in 1952, the son of pro wrestler and world situp champion Angelo Poffo. A standout high school baseball player, Randy was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals and spent time in several other teams' minor league systems before turning his attention to pro wrestling in the Seventies. By the end of the Eighties, now christened "Macho Man" Randy Savage, he was one of the biggest stars in the WWF, and would go on to wrestle for WCW. His younger brother, Lanny Poffo, was also an established wrestler of the era. Oh hell yeah, now this is a statue I can get behind. They should put the Macho Man idol at the corner of Broad and High. If you dig that, you can sign the petition here. https://www.change.org/p/andrew-ginther-a-macho-man-randy-savage-statue-in-downtown-columbus-ohio

Mojoe
Hilarious. What an excellent thing to spend city money on! :dumb: Can't fill a pothole in the road, but check out this cool statue. Countless veterans, LEO's, Fire fighters, EMS, and other public servants have done great things too. Not everyone needs a statue or to get a prize. Geeto67
Can't fill a pothole in the road, but check out this cool statue. Not every statue is funded by the government. Most aren't. Often not for profits, donors, or benefactors put up the cost of the statue and the city just grants the space. Take the Hollywood walk of fame for example: Adam West's star was paid for via Fundraising efforts lead by Ralph Garman (from KRok radio and a shit load of kevin smith podcasts). After erection (he..he..) of a macho man statue it would be the city who has to maintain it which they will probably do with all the same zeal as they use to fill potholes. Countless veterans, LEO's, Fire fighters, EMS, and other public servants have done great things too. Not everyone needs a statue or to get a prize. The are other value considerations besides commemoration or a "Prize". Philly has a rocky statue and there are often tourists outside (even in the worst weather) waiting to have their picture taken with it. Things like this often add to the "interest" and cultural value of the city and help to generate tourist revenue for the city (however small). I am not saying Cbus will become a tourist destination overnight because of a statue to a pro wrestler, but it might cause a few extra people to visit an area they may not normally visit, and thereby drive some small stream of revenue to the businesses there. Stuff like this tends to "celebrate" the city and it's positive attributes more than the person. I didn't go to Philly for vacation any of the times I went, but I did have my picture taken with the Rocky statue twice, and because of it visited the Art Museum at least once and bought a pretzel from the street vendor there. Just sayin'....

Geeto67
Shut the fuck up, Kerry. classy. If it makes you feel better I think the petition is stupid because it asks the city to pay for it. What it should be is a kickstarter campaign and a petition to allow them to build a statue someplace.

B3NN3TT
I love Macho Man, but all these details about how many championships he's held really has nothing to do with his athletic ability; it's all about what the writers wanted to do that week. In the words of Richard Lewis, "Nate the Bed-Ridden Jew" could have held 20 championships if that's the way the scripts went. Not to say he wasn't in great physical condition, or wasn't a terrific athlete, but WWF championship titles aren't a good measurement of those metrics... However, unlike many here, I'm aware that's just that's just my opinion and it's not "The Word". Cbus can blow its entire wad on a statue of a statue blowing its entire wad if they want. Disclaimer: The mothman statue is kinda cool. lol

wagner
I'm guessing that's a real Robocop that's waiting to be activated if things go completely sideways. Not even Robocop can save that hell-hole of a city, best to kill it all with fire and start over.
Trouble Maker
I'm actually curious about the economic impact of statues like this. I know when I've visited other cities, it makes it a lot more interesting walking around if there are things like this, and makes me more likely to come back. I'm sure it could draw people in, just by itself too. It very well may pay for itself, or even have an ROI, from the increased tourism.
