The Bay City Rollers? Remember for every Doors or Led Zeppelin there is always a Captain and Tennille or Herman's Hermits. The distribution of music has changed, and in many ways it's much harder to find good music. Also with the advent of social media and file sharing, and artist distribution, a very ugly truth was exposed: everyone's taste in music blows. They did, it was called Payola. they got caught in 1959: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payola And they still do in a way because of various loop holes that nobody sees fit to close and the use of a proxy called an indie. Rather than bribe one person they buy the whole station by underwriting the stations promotions (or did you think the radio station was paying for that trip to cochella?) Radio Airplay campaigns (similar to oscar campaigns) make sure the practice will not go away. Also because playlists in new media are a lot like radio airplay except without the pesky government oversight so payola is now self policed. Awesome isn't it.
