I'm fortunate enough to get the see him about once a month for the last three years. He's definitely getting weaker but he still walk straight and tall. Many years ago (maybe in the 80's?) he spoke at a dinner I attended and he told this story (as best I can remember it): I recently spoke at an event and after my speech, the host speaker heaped praises on me and called me "one of the few true American heroes. I thought about that phrase a few minutes, and then leaned over to my wife, Annie, and said, "you know, there really aren't many true American heroes." Annie immediately replied, "i know one thing -- there's one fewer than what you're thinking."
