zeitgeist57
So my son wants a go-kart, and after 4th of July I'd love to get something to tool around UA in. Son is OK with a golf cart that we can customize. I think the prices people are charging on CL for golf carts are ridiculous. Anyone have a cheap, older model of golf cart that could be fixed up and bought relatively cheap? Thanks! FYI there is apprently a $500 EZ-GO 36v cart in upper Arlington for $500. I messaged them earlier but haven't heard back. Now thinking I just put my name on a scam list somewherd

Rocky31186
Just know that a battery powered is expensive to fix the batterys. We have one at work and even keeping it charged they normally only last a year.
zeitgeist57
I shot a message to that H-D seller in Sunbury, too. No response. I swear CL is full of scammers. I've never had good luck with it.
iwashmycar
Maybe try Facebook market Yamaha gas for 1400 They show an electric one for 800 but needs batteries...no clue what they cost or are worth.

2 Sweet
The gas ones are faster than the electric anyway. At least in my experience

A golf cart? really? this is what you want to do: http://gokartsusa.com/3551gokartkit5aluminumwheels.aspx you buy the kit, and then you and him build it and customize it, together. Take like a year to do. if that is too much, there are plenty of vintage karts around for semi-cheap: https://columbus.craigslist.org/snw/6205765888.html https://columbus.craigslist.org/bar/6193314190.html https://columbus.craigslist.org/snw/6210530637.html https://columbus.craigslist.org/spo/6211732269.html https://columbus.craigslist.org/snw/6209750427.html But I have to be honest, even the go karts that are limited to 25mph are too fast for a 6 year old if you aren't using them in a closed track environment with all the safety gear. He really should be 8, closer to 9, when he starts to zip around. For now it's probably best to stick to the power wheels and mod those, or maybe look at pedal karts. so this isn't really for "him" is it? If it is for you then just buy a gas golf kart and put the required street stuff so you can use it on ohio roads and get plates for it and leave it alone (http://www.10tv.com/article/golf-carts-will-be-allowed-ohio-roadways-starting-2017). zeitgeist57
Kerry, my son is NEVER going to race a go-kart, so if I'm spending more money on a limited-use gas powered device, then I'm going to do a golf cart that my family and I can use to get around UA and use it for parties/parades. UA's 100-year anniversary is next year so it would be fun to go to some of the restaurants/parks that will be hosting events. Families I know rent a 4-passenger golf cart for $300 over 4th of July weekend, every year...I could kill a handful of birds (fun runabout, neighborhood cart for son/daughter, parade-special) by buying something under $1500 and fixing it up. Every home-built go-kart seems frought with ridiculous compromises (unless you spend $1500+ for a shifter/dedicated-race cart), and a minimum of several hundred dollars to not get much use out of it. A golf cart that hauls 2-4 people would be fun and something I'd get a lot more use out of it. P.S>>> If any of you younger guys without families or civic connections think this is wierd, I totally get it. Just trust me when I tell you after settling into a community with adult friends involved around town and kids in schools/sports/programs, that something like a family golf cart makes a lot more sense. First it's for your kid who want's a go kart, then it's for family fun to tool around in during the summer holidays. really the cart is for you, I don't see what a 6 year old is going to get out of it besides applying stickers. here: https://columbus.craigslist.org/grd/6211389993.html I don't think you even need to do anything with it other than drive it. As for the old style vintage go karts - the value in them is building the kit. They aren't "compromised" so much as they are just simple machines. Direct drive, small engine, single disc, clutch optional. They used to be fun for camps and places where they could pave a small track and let kids rip around at 15mph and learn to "drive". They are a kids toy, not at all what you want so it doesn't matter.
SpaceGhost
My ten year old is crushed she can't drive her pink 24v converted powerwheels mustang anymore, but Christ she simply can't fit in the thing anymore she's approaching 5 ft tall. :lolguy: We raced the thing last weekend, it won again in the powerwheels race with 2 different neighbor girls piloting it. And ruffled some serious feathers with a parent of some boys, who have never won the race. Clay, find a cheap powerwheel and buy the kits from M and L toys and do the conversion, and buy spare tires, they don't last long, but the fun the boy will have. The Mustang is now parked as I didn't buy the metal upgraded gearboxes and one of the motors tore up a gearbox. So it's out of commission. Don't think I'm gonna fix it either. I should have bought this: http://www.mltoys.com/product-p/stage-iv-mustang.htm
zeitgeist57
My boy has both a Tesla ($700!) and Corvette PowerWheels, compliments of grandparents. The cars are plenty fast enough and he doesn't drive them that often. Actually to his credit we've gone on a lot more bike trips this summer. If my kids didn't have some decent PowerWheels already, I'd be more inclined to do a go-kart. I may need to wait until the fall, when people are done and looking to unload before winter storage becomes a space/cost concern for owners... Dharris89
Contact the local golf courses. I don't golf but I've appraised a few and they depreciate them fast. That way they can buy new ones every few years. Find out if any courses are looking to unload a few at the end of the season. Lots of larger apartment complexes do the same thing. Alfa Turbo
Golf carts are ONLY legal to use on the road in UA on the 4th, verbotten the rest of the year. A push was made about 5 years ago to legalize them and that effort went down in flames. Do you know if something has changed? http://www.thisweeknews.com/content/stories/upperarlington/news/2010/08/25/golf-carts-on-the-road-in-ua-unlikely-in-foreseeable-future.html Edited July 13, 2017 by Alfa Turbo Link added
zeitgeist57
Brian, I remember when that failed at City Council by a 5-4 vote, and I gave one of the guys crap for it. Not sure if the state trumps city. I'll do some digging as I have time.
Geeto67
Not sure if the state trumps city. I'll do some digging as I have time. City can go narrower, not broader, off of state rules. This means the city can generally restrict further from what the state allows (make something illegal if the state says it is legal) if it has an overwhelming public interest, but it can't make something legal if the state says it is illegal. So probably no.
