Cooper Stadium

I seriously doubt the owners are allowing this. They still plan on redevoping this someday. The community is already pissed that it’s been years since the track and R&D building were supposed to be done. I can’t imagine this would help “community relations.”

Apparently the owners of the old Cooper satdium property are cool with it but only for sanctioned events. As in you can't just stop by whenever you want. I expect this to be a total disaster of epic proportions. But it would be cool if they can pull it off.

They need to do something with that dump. It's been sitting there half torn down for how long, a decade now? Sad to see. I have a lot of good memories going to games there.

It's a shame that the race track plan never worked out. I'm still pissed that they plowed Columbus Motor Speedway for a fucking lacrosse complex.

The title of the video was VERY misleading... there we no racing at all in that video.

Then he says in the description "This is a promo video"... Click-bait video is very Click-bait.

I'm all for some fun, but this looks dangerous and to short of a parking lot to do much of anything.

We did part of the broadcast from the Dig Night street race at NRG Stadium a couple of years ago, that was a total shit show on so many levels, and it even had some "organization" to it.

1. The parking lot is going to be WAY short for fast cars. You need lots of real estate for a "safe" shutdown.

2. The surface is going to be way to bumpy, worse than a road. It might be fine for the cone dodgers, but you try to put a race car down that surface that doesn't like bumps bad stuff will happen.

3. Facebook has already killed this. All these mouth breathing, vape sucking, cheeto eating "racers" are already going there to test and the weather isn't even good yet.

4. The city of Columbus will shut this down because the NIMBYs don't want it.

I was going to say, just from that clip the parking lot looks like shit. That dude with the camaro couldn't even hold it straight for his entire 600ft run. I would be skeptical about running auto-X through there as well, though it is probably a better space for it. Then again, the OSU parking lot wasn't all that great (are they still doing that by the way?).

I will say this - it probably wouldn't be a bad place for a stationary car/bike show and swap meet.

Any contact info for setting up autocross there?

I posted about it on the OVR SCCA forum since they had a huge hand when the property was pushing to be a race facility.

EDIT

Per SCCA contact on the forum -

Nope. Trust me on this, my source couldn't be any higher up the ladder. That was not a permitted activity and those folks were trespassing. The police will be present on the 31st to prevent any further trespassing. Cooper is not available for racing/motorsports at this time.

That's fuckin retarded. Should eminent domain that place and use it for best and highest use, which is obviously for motorsports.

Cbus LOL 14th most populous city and what... ONE single track way east of town to pretend to motorsports in? What a joke.

Yes and no. I have to be careful here but HBU needs “special funding” to make it work. Its been about a year since I’ve worked on this but last I knew the owners are still trying to build a test track which could accommodate other types of races and events. But it’s been hard putting the pieces together and getting financing for basically a long shot. Plus there is more than just the track component in the equation. I agree it’s taken a LONG time and I’d love to see something finally happen.

You should note in the comments that there isn't an event page for this because they are still "wrapping up details". So, stay tuned for what actually may happen..........

I'll believe it when people are leaving after the successful completion of the event, without a police escort.;)

I'm glad Schottenstein is still focused on building something like SPARC at Cooper Park - I understand better than most that after spending $40MM on a unique, limited-use property to establish an even MORE unique property, it truly is a dance of players and whom is going to commit funding when. Carts-before-horses sort of thing; even with a lot of money in play, there are a lot of egos and agendas that developers have to align to get commitments.

If the city owned Cooper Park, it would've been a great venue for Fortress Obetz and the Ohio Machine...instead of destroying an already-respected motorsports venue already within Columbus MSA.

Even more reason why I hope SPARC still happens at some point...

Regarding OP: My only complaint about this happening in the parking lot (aside from Wags' experience in the actual "track" conditions being entirely unsafe for legit drag racing) is that it introduces an unwanted hooligan aspect to this property that has been largely left alone. Think about it: now idiots that forgot about CP still existing are now going to want to do stupid stuff in the parking lot, PISSING OFF the neighborhood. Those of us that volunteered our time for SPARC a few years back know that if it's not people living there to worry about, it's the dead ones at Greenlawn Cemetary and their well-connected relatives that will raise holy hell if sounds/smoke offend a peaceful cemetary after zoning-enforced noise ordianances are violated. It will only take one bad event to set SPARC plans off by several years, if not forever...
