Which air compressor?

I'm in need of a new compressor for my small uninsulated garage (10x23) nothing fancy, as it'll only see occasional use. The new tank will be sitting in the corner of the garage connected to a 50' hose reel mounted on the wall, so it doesn't necessarily need to be light or easily portable. I'm trying to decide between oiled and oil-free. Not sure if the cold winter temperatures in the garage should be a factor in my decision?

I have the even cheaper version of the first one and I've had it for like 9 years, but it looks like the motor is the same one on mine. It is a little hard to start in the winter if its REALLY cold out. Maybe the oil-less would operate better in those temperatures.

I have the same one I think you're talking about. A good 10 years old. (black/21 gallon). Mine doesn't want to start either in stupid cold weather like below freezing but it does the job for what I need it for. Hell I used it to paint the car last year.

By no means an expert but I went through a lot of learning when selecting the large one I have. Key is what you will be using it for and will the units have the cfm flow to drive the tools. Then consider the usage of it....occasional and infrequent or every week and constantly.

 

If your not going to be using it much an oil free would be fine. They have a shorter life than an oiled unit but again, how often will you really be using it and for how long each time?

 

I went local with Home Depot and their brand simple because they are decent products with the ability to buy on-site or in store warranties and they are cheap. My 60Gal was $99 for an additional 5yrs on everything.

 

Lowes has a nice line up in their Kobalt brand. Hindsight, I may have gotten theirs but I had to put a marker down for price spent.

I would also recommend you make sure you have a 30amp or better dedicated line for it. Mine is 220v and at the same time I had a dedicated 30amp installed for my deep freeze and garage fridge too. Had all three done for a very reasonable price with a local electrician (journeyman) who is retired and does work on the side. Awesome guy if you need anything.
