Super-cheap ECU?

A couple of years ago, I helped a friend rip a Northstar V8 and trans out of a 2000 Caddy Eldorado for a Fiero swap project. He's had it for the last 2 years as getting an aftermarket GM ECU piggy-back solution was surprisingly expensive at the time.

With all the advancements in ECU and tuning over the last few years, is there any cheap, somewhat universal, off-the-shelf solution that gets an EFI engine started and running again? Like, a Chinese-built Holley Terminator X at 33% of the cost? ;) I realize the Trans computer may be an issue if the ECU needs to talk to it, but I'm not much of a builder to know what the options are these days. Thanks!

Megasquirt or its many variations, the Microsquirt variant in particular is the "entry level" one.

There is also Speeduino, which has come a really long way since I originally found it many years ago. Arduino based ECU, uses a lot of Megasquirt stuff for the actual tuning so if someone can tune MS they can do Speeduino.

HOLY FUCK this is cool. I was playing around with arduinos a ton from 2010-2013, and tossed around the idea of a simple 1-4cyl FI ecu an arduino. Super fucking cool to see a developed project around one.

No joke the boost gauge on my volvo back in 2010 was powered by an arduino and vacuum sensor.
