ISSUE 2: Does anyone understand it? Help me to!

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has nothing to do with your local humane society. They also are not funded by the United States. This is a very big misconception among people because of the name they use.

Each and every humane society is essentially independent. Either way, I won't support an ammendment that serves to create a beaucracy (at least not this one)... we need animal rights, not a committee that may create some.

Thanks for all the replys here, this issue still confuses me a bit though.

With other issues its so much easier to understand what your vote means...

Issue 3 for example...

- a YES means you WANT casinos in Ohio

- a NO means you do NOT want casinos in Ohio

I don't really understand what my YES or NO vote means on this issue.

Oh Dept of Agriculture is for it, most farmers appear to be for it, Columbus Dispatch is against it.

Now that I've said that, I'll probably vote YES on it since the Dispatch is also against the casino issue and I want that!

A no vote on Issue 2 would pretty much put my farm out of business.

See, this is what confuses me. Explain please. I don't get it.

I thought the issue was about this "board" of standards, so if this board of standards does not happen,

doesn't that mean things kinda stay the way they are now?

They will stay the way they are now for maybe another year. Then HSUS will probably propose their humane ways of treating animals and it will go to a general public vote. Then after they pass that they will just keep getting more strict and eventually put most farms out of business

Voting yes for it is pretty much saying that we(farmers) dont need a board to tell us what is best for our livestock.

Dude I think you're misleading/uninformed...

Vote Yes creates a board to create laws "protecting" livestock.

Vote No lets farmers continue status quo.

imho neither is a great option but I'm against putting in an ammendment that does nothing more than creating a beauracracy to setting standards.

Now, why are people saying this puts farms out? Because that little section I posted... this board is authorized to create standards based on providing LOCAL farms with jobs. So if China is too competitive this board could, in essence, allow Ohio farmers to do whatever it takes.

End of the day:

Vote Yes creates a board

Vote No continues status quo

Now I'm really confused. From what I've read, doesn't voting YES, or passing Issue 2 MEAN that this board of 13 will be put in place??

Isn't that exactly the opposite of what you just said? You're saying you don't need this board, doesn't that mean you DO NOT want issue 2 to pass??

Am I the only one that can't quite grasp this?

Right' date=' but who makes up the board?[/quote']

Quoted from... http://www.agri.ohio.gov/public_docs/news/2009/10-30-09%20Issue%202%20Op%20Ed.pdf

" By approving Issue 2, voters will create the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board, which will serve to establish a uniform set of standards for livestock and poultry care in Ohio. This 13-member board will be comprised of a diverse mix of Ohio experts in animal care and food production. Its membership will include: the Ohio Director of Agriculture, three family farmers, a state licensed-veterinarian, the Ohio Department of Agriculture State Veterinarian, a food safety expert, a county Humane Society representative, two statewide farm organization members, an Ohio agriculture college or university dean, and two members of the public representing Ohio consumers."

Issue 2 would create a 13-member livestock care board; 10 members would be appointed by the governor, and the Ohio House and Senate each would appoint one member. The director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture would appoint the board's chairperson.

The board would include three family farmers, two veterinarians - including the state veterinarian - a food safety expert, a representative from a local humane society, two members from statewide farm organizations, the dean of a state agriculture college and two members representing Ohio consumers.
