President Obama went to Arlington Cemetery to lay the wreath last year, but this year Obama’s handing the wreath to Plugs and heading off to the more welcoming political climes of Chicago:

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama plans to spend a long holiday weekend in Chicago.

The White House says Obama and his family will travel to their hometown on Thursday and stay through the weekend. It will be their first trip back home since a visit for Valentine’s Day weekend in February 2009.

On Monday, Obama is scheduled to participate in a Memorial Day ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill.

In Obama’s absence, Vice President Joe Biden will participate in the customary wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington.

Obama will however make it back to Washington in time next week to honor Paul McCartney, who has sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy.

Boy, I’m starting to think that West Point speech wasn’t from the heart.

Update: Obama will alter vacation plans slightly and travel to the Gulf on Friday in a desperate attempt to plug the blowout in his approval ratings

Previous presidents have allowed others to lay wreath at Arlington Cemetery to honor troops

1983: Reagan attended summit meeting; Defense Department official Thayer laid wreath at Arlington. Deputy Secretary of Defense W. Paul Thayer laid a wreath at Arlington Cemetery during the Memorial Day ceremony in 1983, according to a May 31, 1983, Washington Post article (accessed via Nexis). The AP reported that President Reagan attended a "summit meeting in Williamsburg, Va., with leaders of the industrialized democracies."

1992: George H.W. Bush allowed VP Quayle to lay wreath. In 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, according to a May 26, 1992, Boston Globe article (accessed via the Nexis database). The Globe reported that President George H.W. Bush attended a wreath-laying ceremony and made brief remarks at an American Legion hall in Kennebunkport, Maine, where he also played a round of golf.

Veterans Day 2007: Cheney attends ceremony to pay tribute at Arlington as Bush remained in Texas. On November 11, 1007, the AP reported that "President Bush honored U.S. troops past and present at a tearful ceremony Sunday for four Texans who died there." The AP further reported that "Vice President Dick Cheney went to Arlington to pay tribute to Iraq veterans."

You do realize that Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is a national cemetery too, right? Arlington isn't the ONLY one -- it's just the closest to DC, making it convenient for Presidents to attend.

Errr... wait. I AM OUTRAGED!!! :villagers:

Maybe I'm missing something here, but he's not the first President ever to spend a holiday weekend away from work. Secondly, he's participating in a different Memorial Day service. I guess I just don't see the big deal. Unless it's just more Obama hating, in which case, there are no words that could prove my point... :dunno:

edit: JRMMiii beat me to it.

44% approval yesterday, 42% today. Not necessarily related to this story, but still...

I'm not interested in seeing both sides of the story anymore. He lies and deceives, and his media lets him do it. He IS what Bush was ACCUSED of being. Fascist, liar, warmonger. Don't get me wrong, Bush did some less than desirable things, but not with the complete contempt and disregard which Obama has for this great country.

Progressive = socialist. Socialism doesn't work. Never has, never will. He's trying to break this country financially. I pray that we survive the next five months. 11/02/10, my friends. 11/02/10.

Bush signed the Patriot Act. I find that more offensive than not displaying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery.
The single biggest attack on americans' freedoms.

Interesting that this was brought up.

I remember the outrage from many on the right and virtually everyone on the left when the Patriot Act was signed. However, I missed the same vitriol, wailing and gnashing of teeth when BHO extended it.

Why the duplicity? I mean if it was bad then, its bad now - right?

Anyway, its probably better that Slow Joe is going to lay the wreath anyway. Maybe we'll have another "big fucking deal" moment, as opposed to BHO saying "I, me, my" throughout his entire speech.

I can think of other legislation that is even' date=' or higher, on the infringement level. Patriot isn't the top, but it's up there.. for sure. Fucking fuckers!![/quote']

No doubt.

However, why has the bitching and moaning towards Obama for extending it been largely absent from the media?

it has been a long standing tradition for presidents to go to arlington, this is a break in the tradition. obamas commitment to the military has been questionable and this doesnt help.

Several Presidents have bagged on Arlington for Memorial Day, so I don't know that this should really rock the boat - especially when you consider that he's no fan of the military.

Based on the attitude he's displayed in the past, I think we're better off without him there anyway.
