Alpinestars focused on designing the MX-1 suit specifically for track riders. With that in mind, ventilation was addressed to meet the needs of a rider at high speed while eliminating areas that are less effective on a racing motorcycle. The MX-1 is perforated in all the right areas for the rider in a racing position; either in full tuck or when hanging off the bike. The suit takes advantage of air passing by the sides and above the rider – where bodywork does not block or otherwise inhibit air from coming into contact with the suit.

alpinestars_mx1_leather_suit_ventilation_scheme-1.jpg

With the rider in a full tuck, perforations on the chest are of little effect, so Alpinestars uses the sides of the torso and the upper arms to address this issue. In addition to the perforated leather, the stretch material on the underside of the arms also helps support the very effective cooling properties of the suit. Not only does the air get into the suit as the rider moves down the track, but the perforations flanking the torso help draw sweat and moisture off of the rider for a comfortable ride.

alpinestars_mx_1_suit_black_5.jpg

To deliver cooling air to the upper back, the MX-1 Alpinestars suit relies on these hard plastic shoulder protectors. With this design, it possible to safely deliver air to the upper back without sacrificing the integrity of an extremely vulnerable area of the suit. In fact, these shoulder protectors not only enhance ventilation, but they also help dissipate impact energy in the event of a crash, increase abrasion resistance of this critical joint and they reduce the likelihood of tumbling too! As you can see, these shoulder protectors are not only well-placed from a safety standpoint, but they’re also in an excellent location to send cooling air to the rider regardless of his position on the bike.

Alpinestars has also relies on a perforated aerodynamic hump to push cooling air into the suit and straight to the middle back. Unfortunately, some back protectors can block this cooling effect if they’re not perforated. If this describes the unit you’re using, talk to us about getting a Forcefield ProSub4 or Pro L2 back protector – these are not only the best back protectors on the market in terms of impact performance, but they’re also extremely comfortable thanks to their well thought-out ventilation schemes that work superbly with ventilated humps like the one you see on the Alpinestars MX-1 leather suit.

The upper thighs are also highly perforated to take advantage of air passing by the rider at speed to keep him cool.

As you can clearly see, the ventilation systems employed on Alpinestars’ MX-1 suit are specifically designed for the track-going performance rider. Suit perforations are designed perfectly to compliment modern sportbikes while at the same time enhancing safety. You’ll stay cool and comfortable on the bike so you can enjoy your time at the track with the Alpinestars MX-1 leather suit.

Niiice! At this price I should probably get another MX-1... I've had 2 and track tested them multiple times. Some people here have seen my current red/white one which is pretty beat up but a couple seasons ago AStars repaired some stitching and certified it good to go! Definitely a nice piece of gear.

Armor is another critical area in which the MX-1 suit excels with CE-certified units mounted in all of the right places. Each piece of armor is designed to comfortably articulate with the wearer as he moves about the bike. Armor that covers a critical joint like the elbow, knee/shin or shoulder is made to be large for a wider swath of protective impact coverage. Take for example this piece of elbow armor - it also protects a large area of the forearm. Notice the cutouts within the armor itself, these are designed to allow the wearer to move freely when on the bike with no bunching that would otherwise inhibit movement and possibly distract the rider.

alpinestars_mx_1_leather_suit_detail_1.jpg

Knees and shins are looked after in a slightly different manner than the armor in other suits we’ve seen with two pieces covering this area. This arrangement not only permits exceptional ease of movement, but also provides extra coverage around the shin and knee. Since riders rarely fall flat on their chests when leaving the bike unexpectedly, the extra wide coverage protects from side impacts too. Furthermore, each piece of armor is perforated for comfort on the hard outer surface while channels are molded into the soft inner liner that faces the rider. All of these features combine to provide a comfortable, yet very protective suit for the trackday rider or racer.

alpinestars_mx_1_leather_suit_detail_6.jpg

In addition to the standard armor arrangements noted above, the Alpinestars MX-1 suit also uses soft foam armor in a pair of chest compartments. For riders that already have a chest protector, these may be removed – or they can be upgraded with a pair Alpinestars Bionic Chest Pads for added front impact protection.

alpinestars_mx_1_leather_suit_detail_2.jpg

You’ll also find additional soft armor inserted into various areas of the suit, like these pads on the sides of the abdomen. It just goes to show that Alpinestars is serious about providing real protection for the serious rider.

alpinestars_mx_1_suit_black_11.jpg

Best of all, if you don’t already have a Level 2 back protector, the MX-1 comes standard with a Bionic Race back protector which can be used with this – or any piece of motorcycle riding gear you have. For the rider that prefers convenience, a three-position snap-lock interface between the back protector and the leathers easily allows this piece of armor to be firmly positioned within the suit for maximum protection and comfort.

The MX-1’s removable interior liner makes it easy to get into (or out of!) the suit thanks to its breathable mesh design. But it does more than that. First, extra foam padding has been sewn into the sides of the upper arms and at the hips to further enhance the already excellent impact absorption technology of the MX-1 suit. Second, the liner makes the suit incredibly comfortable for the wearer because, if you notice in the picture below – seams are sewn on the outside of the liner. This makes the surface nearly flat on the inside of the liner so there are no hot spots against the wearer. Third, by using smooth stretch material in the arms, inside the thighs and around the knees – movement is much, much easier for the wearer. And fourth, the mesh liner aids in the already well-thought-out ventilation scheme of the suit by standing the leather off of the skin and permitting cooling air to get to and move around the wearer while at speed.

We recommend that this liner be used in conjunction with an undersuit like Alpinestars Tech Race for the most amount of movement and comfort possible. As for the zip-out liner itself, while it’s not the prettiest thing, its contribution towards making the MX-1 suit comfortable and highly protective cannot be overstated.

Don’t miss out on this killer Alpinestars suit sale, sizes and availability is limited so call us now!

These particular US sizes/colors are no longer available:

Red 36, 38, 42

Blue 36, 38, 42, 44

Black 38

All other sizes/colors are in stock and ready to ship!

One outstanding feature of the Alpinestars MX-1 suit is the way it’s put together. Alpinestars tech uses several different stitching methods to assemble the MX-1 suit. Each stitching method is chosen based upon the needs of that specific area of the suit. Critical seams, like the one shown here for the lower back/buttox area, use multiple rows for assembly. In this way, the seam itself is not only more robust, but the stitching is well hidden from exposure should the rider hit the ground.

alpinestars_mx_1_leather_suit_detail_5.jpg

The knees are another area that requires multiple rows of stitching for safety, but flexibility here is also critical in order to allow the rider freedom of movement on the bike. To accomplish these two competing interests, the leather on the knees features the same hidden stitching techniques as used in other areas of the suit, but also employ a leather stretch accordion panel just above the joint. The accordion panel is created by laying leather flat over a piece of stretched elastic material which is then sewn together. Once the leather/elastic material is released from the sewing jig, it assumes the accordion shape you see just above the knee. Using these techniques, the knee joint has the impact and abrasion resistance required while also allowing plenty of flexibility for the wearer.

alpinestars_mx_1_suit_red_5.jpg

In areas that are the least likely to come into contact with the pavement in the event of a crash, stretch Kevlar panels are employed. These not only permit exceptional flexibility for the wearer, but they also provide a degree of custom fitment so one size is suitable for a wide range of shapes. These Kevlar stretch panels are located behind the knees, in the crotch and along the inside of the arms.

The consequences of the suit’s main zipper failing are many. At best, it could end your day (or weekend) at the track, or at worst – lead to serious injury if it failed mid-crash. That’s why Alpinestars employs multiple stitch technology to hold the main zipper in place. This stitching runs along the entire length of the YKK zipper. The leather that runs along the edge of the zipper does double duty with a specific rolled stitch technique that buries the zipper to protect it from impact and abrasion, further enhancing survivability.

alpinestars_mx_1_suit_black_12.jpg

The MX-1 leather suit was built with lessons learned at the top levels of racing. The suits you see Alpinestars-sponsored riders in MotoGP, AMA and WSBK wearing use many of the same features you find on MX-1. And for all but one rider, Alpinestars constructs those suits using cowhide leather, not kangaroo – which is what they sell to the rest of us.

I love the descriptions of the items you sell. Your description of this suit told me about features it has that I didn't know about and I have had it for four years.
