Turns out he was only a few miles from work when the deer jumped out in his lane... gave it all the brakes he could, but hit the deer and killed it instantly. Steel toe boots nearly ripped off his big toe nail, and the helmet has a big long scrape from the chin bar going across the face shield. He's got some broken ribs and he can't move so well right now, but he's home and resting up for his doctor ordered 2 week minimum vaycay.
