bmwnut
This is due to new EPA rules:mad: They have been working on this for a while and I think Harley has staved them off for a some time but aircooled will soon go the way of the 2 stroke:confused: even for H D
ironbuttwannabe
And it also comes with a cheaper price tag that is if they still want to compete

ReconRat
HD is moving toward a water cooled head to meet EPA requirements.Leaving the cylinder jugs unchanged if possible, to keep tradition.
ShankroidBeast
the layout is very similar to the vw flat 4. both were built with air/oil cooled as part of the design. i remember when the flat six porsche engine went water cooled. big protest, but inevitable... Steve Butters
why is water cooled better for the environment? wouldnt air cooled be better? less fluids to have to deal with, waste wise?
motociclista
Liquid cooling maintains a more consistent temperature, so you have more efficient combustion, fewer emissions. That's the simple version from a non-engineer. We only change the coolant once every few years, so a few quarts to dispose of then is not nearly as much of an environmental factor as the amount of emissions every time the engine is running. Gixxus Christ!
Fuck the epa. They are the reason new sport bike exhausts are so god-awful ugly. They even made kaw re-map the ecu on the new zx12 to cut fuel in high rpm to meet their pussy ass requirements.
