Kneelingbefore entering a building?

A plumbing contractor just arrived where I work, and as he reached the door he put his hand out to the handle, put one knee on the ground, bowed his head, then stood up and opened the door.

Typical white American guy - who then walked 20 feet and stood with hi other plumber buddies and started chatting - they saw it and didn't react.

Is there some kind of religion / cultural practice that requires you to kneel before entering a building? Or does this guy have some major OCD (I've heard of rare people who have issues going through doors due to OCD and have a ritual to do so).

Yeah, no clue. Only heard of it in Traditional Catholicism when entering a church that has the sacraments. Same for Islamic culture when entering a mosque.

edit: There is some sort of practice in South Africa that requires that. Any building.

It is mandatory for a 'thwasa' (sangoma-in-training) to kneel before entering a building. Vangethongo pays her respects as she enters the Pan-African market in Cape Town where her tailor works.
