  6. Forced into it at risk of being put out of business. It was a poor social experiment that didn't work. People who had money were forced to lend it at a risk they weren't going to accept so they packaged the risk and sold it to others. Smart money on their part and the results were very predictable. All of this could have been avoided if the government wouldn't have had the power to interfere with business and make sure poor people who shouldn't or couldn't afford a house got one. The risks shouldn't have been forced onto the banks and the banks end running the risk was the only option they had to protect themselves. In the end the government had to bail out a problem they created and we paid for. Had they been up front about their social experiment and subsidized the loans up front the political backlash from that decision would have prevented the whole mess.

  7. I was wrong about MSRP, but I've seen them lower than the listed $1000. It was the May 2010 issue. Comparison between Springfield GI ($643), Hi Standard 1911A1 ($480), Colt Black Army 1918 ($1000) and Springfield Mil-spec ($753). Colt won the comparison with the Mil-spec a close second. Mil-spec shot 1.8 inch group at 25 yards (best). Colt shot a best group of 1.9 at 25 yards. 25 yards is a long way for 100 year old iron sight technology.

  9. [cynic hat on] Obama never intended this bill to pass. It was re-election fodder designed to definitely prove how worthless the republicans are. To wit, he gave up on his "rich people making over 250 thousand a year" schtick and has shifted his target to a 5.4% increase tax increase on people making over a cool mil. And republicans are still dead-set against it. The rest of the bill is chock full of tax cuts and spending cuts and minor increases in unemployment programs. It's not a liberal bill at all; Obama has moved so far to the right that people don't even realize how typical this bill would have been for Bush. I don't think Obama had any intention of this thing passing, I think he just slapped it together to make the opposition look bad for the upcoming election. Hell, at this point he could submit a bill that banned abortion and mandated free guns for everyone and republicans would still find something wrong with it. Anyway, it annoys me that he's already playing the re-election campaign. It annoys me that he's moved so far to the right in order to compromise with lunatics. It annoys me that both parties continue to shove polarizing figures into the spotlight in order to ensure that the cycle continues. +1 on feeling bad for the country. [cynic hat off]
